I somewhat agree with this. But is the club building for the 5% or the 95%? Stuff can be technical and fun, but also safe for other riders.

Why is there even a Flow terra? To keep 5% of the club happy ?

Lets have one section for XCO then and make the Flow terra fun for all not just 5%

Quagga I find your posts "interesting" ....

In my 50's, working for myself, also do many miles with a 7 year old .... so clearly I dont have the same appetite for danger as many of the posters.  So I find myself agreeing with the centiment of your series of posts.

That said,  there are AMPLE trails for us casual weekend riders !!

In January I even did the very dangerous XCO course at Bloemendal ... okay, okay, I KNEW there was no way I was risking life and limb flying off those wooden ramps !!  But I could still do the full XCO course by making use of the chicken runs ....

Us guys that like gravity more than climbing, we don't hassle people going slow on stuff. We know that people like progressing, and we give them all the time they need. If we come rushing up behind you on what is (for us) a pretty fast section, well that's our problem and we haul anchors and let you go about your ride, and pass when it's safe. If you come rushing up behind us, and it's clear that you're faster, we pull over as quickly as possible to allow you to continue with the lowest amount of variation in speed possible.

Contrary to popular belief, we weren't always "pinners" - we, too, started at the bottom, and progressed with the tools and spots that were available, like Tokai and Jonkers. Gradually working our way up and hollering like a bloody idiot when others progressed alongside us.

THAT is what we want to have at TB. The ability to allow others to go from the bottom, to the top, and us that are somewhere else along that cruel ladder called progression, to progress just a bit more from where we are.

At the moment, it's catering for the 90th percentile. What we're saying, is build trails to allow for those who want to progress, to claw their way up to the 5th percentile.

ALERT: This does in no way say that I am not respectful and thankful for Patrick's work. He and his team (and other groups involved in the builds) put in an immense amount of work in maintaining and building trail, but I know that to a large degree he has his hands tied on what can and can't be built, apart from in a few small sections. Trail building is immensely physical and is at times an art form, and any trails that we have on privately owned land should never be taken for granted. I've shared beers and shuttles with Patrick multiple times, and talk inevitably at some point leads to a discussion such as we've seen here, however long that conversation may be.

VERY good post !!

The last three years have been most interesting ....  :whistling:  :whistling:   At first everybody and their granny was passing me

Now I have the unique situation where many riders catch us when I ride with Maritz - yet to find a single one of these being agro in passing.  Then again, I am alert to this and ask Maritz to pull over as soon as it is safe to do so, often pre-empting this and stopping just before the faster riders catch us.

Riding on my own I am now in that position where I catch some newer riders, and I get caught by the experienced riders.  In all this time only one teenage puck racer got all agro.

So as far as sharing the trails, we are very impressed with those we share these trails with

As far as "skills" .... for now we are happy to be able to do the likes of B Spot at a fair speed with a decent margin of safety, by using skills taught by various coaches.

Jumping .... the risk vs reward does not work for me (we stand to loose big contracts if I am out of commission for a few months ... translation - ek is net n banggat outoppie).  But DAMN, it looks GOOD seeing so many on the trails doing it effortlessly !!  I often stop at the bottom of Lombards Terra to just watch the riders grab air on the way down ....  Absolute RESPECT for those that can do this well !!

In places like Tokai hearing doesn’t help because the foliage absorbs a lot of the sound and makes it difficult to determine where the rider is. Lastly the trail isn’t wide enough

It's not often that I agree with something you say haha but ja - ascending riders on descending tracks are a bad idea. I've nearly ploughed into a few runners coming up Firehut in Jonkers (they were wearing earphones). Also had a close call with a rider coming uo never ending story one random weekday morning.

Tokai is fine, as all the trails apart from Faerie and Booulders are unidirectional. In any case, even when Vasbyt was a dual direction trail, 4 years ago, the rule in tokai is still descenders get ROW.

When did this "rule" come into play? The only track in Tokai that was direction specific was the DH track

After the rebuild, vasbyt was changed to down only to prevent instances like the ones described above. Was pretty well publicised, and is on the trail map.

Cobra, Mamba, Boomslang, Snake Eyes and (soon, hopefully) Rinkhals, DH0, 1, 2, 3, AM trail (left fork on DH1), Vasbyt, My roots (soon, hopefully) - all down only.
