colombian cycling has not just sommer come out of nowhere

https://www.pezcyclingnews.com/features/eds-colombian-conquistadors/

need to use the term "altitude native" somewhere here to make this post cooler.

Agree, they have been around for ages.  Remember Café de Colombia from the 80's.

I was more referring to the comment that Saffas have difficultly to adapt to European conditions. It's likely the same for them.

When last did Maincheese have a result? To be honest he only has 2 results worth mentioning. 2nd place at U23 worlds and a top 10 finish at TDF. Since then he was either injured or just not performing.

How can him moving to DD be bad for his career? No matter where he moved he would still not have any results (in my opinion)

No doubt he is a massive talent but there are just more massive talents in play. I would like nothing more than for him to be right up there climbing with the best guys in the world but it does not seem to be in the cards

Does DD have a reputation in the peloton? Is it known as a last resort team? Seems to be judging by the guys they sign....

You're doing the man quite a disservice by only mentioning 2 of his results - have a dig around here and educate yourself: https://www.procyclingstats.com/rider/louis-meintjes/2017

4 wins - 3 in 2015, 1 in 2014. No WT wins. No GT wins.

I know GC is a different approach to results and racing but GC riders do win stages. Maybe a change of approach and just let him try to race free of that pressure and get a couple of wins.

My mistake maybe 1 or 2 of them worth mentioning but I hardly count anything “African Continent” related as significant on the WT stage

I don’t think he is boxed in with making race moves on DD. Do you think he is not attacking on mountain stages or getting race results because DD is dictating him not to try anything? I don’t believe that

Click on some of the other years...

Chris Froome won the TdF without winning a single stage. Not all GCers are stage winners...

Personally I'd like to see the guy back to the form he showed in 2015/6/7. Something massive has gone wrong since his move to DD. Perhaps going for stage wins for a while might be a route back to GC glory (and will hopefully make "a win or don't bother" fans a little less finger pointy.

10th and 12th overall at the Vuelta, 2nd white jersey and 8th overall at the TdF, 2nd white jersey and 8th overall AGAIN at the TdF, 3rd white and 9th overall at Dauphine, 1st youth and 8th overall at Trentino and the list goes on and on - these are pretty darn significant on the WT stage.

These are the results of someone with massive talent and potential to become a multiple GT winner.

Your guess is as good as mine as to why he has had a rotten time at DD. He certainly has the pedigree.

Look at the Tour this year, and how hard it was.

Now go and tell me that a number 8 on GC is not an impressive performance.

To do it back-to-back, is something we can surely celebrate.

For goodness sake, Impey is in the form of his life and he is only the 2nd ever Saffa to take a stage win at the TDF. The top 4 on GC this year didn't even take a single stage win between them.

We can surely celebrate the achievements of MainCheese on the biggest show of World Cycling, they are exceptional, especially given how little support our riders get from the national cycling body at home.

Never said his TDF results are not significant. I’m saying the guy did not do much after his 8th at TDF. He certainly has the pedigree but at the end of the day it is results that gets you contracts. If he does not perform soon he will just be another rider on DD that will ride out his professional career and no other WT team will touch him. Unlike the current DD model where they get riders pass their prime to come retire on the team

Correct his results are nothing to be scoffed at and not something any SA rider will achieve in the near future. Louis is a special rider. All riders have ups and downs.

He is on the up though now which is positive going into Vuelta.

I hope you are correct  regarding him being on the up, If he and Ben O Connor part of Vuelta team they should be able to achieve something at the Vuelta according to me.

Just a lack of racing in his legs this year , but you should no more so holding thumbs for a good end of season for him.

Based on his performances over the last few years a top 20 overall finish at the Vuelta will be a very good result for him.. a top 30 is probably more realistic.

O Conner is also not living up to the hype.

The rider from TDD who has made the most progress this year who I can think of is Stefan de Bod. Perhaps because there were not much expectations or hype.
