After probably 30 years of cycling, Yesterday, for the umteenth time I learned the value of nutrition and hydration on the bike. Went for a 130km mtb ride armed with a bottle of water. Thats it.

Started getting hungry at about 60km. Then I ran out of water at 90km. From then I started brighting and dimming for the last 40 km.

I finished the ride but felt *** for the rest of the day.

Nutrition and hydration is very important. I always try to prove that it isnt but it is.

HTFU rule doesnt work if you dont follow the basics

Also ride with only one bottle, but that’s because it’s all I can fit on my bike. I usually just plan my route to later fill up from one of the mountain streams.

I can also fill up from a stream here.

A sewage stream flowing out of a manhole.

Cocoa and Coconut Bar from Checkers.

Decent ingredients, tasty, and packed with energy. Just don't stockpile as they tend to get rock hard

Ek sal Boshoff try.

Die Koffie shop in Soutpan is befok. Laas jaar daar gestop. Beste chocolate koek ooit.

Was nie lus om weer te ry daarna nie.

Such an innocuous thread and already the hate is coming through strong. Why? (Looking at Big Phil and Patchelicious.)

Your count is tooo low !!

Yes, yes, let the hate rain down upon me. I feed on it.

All in your head bud, no hate being thrown around. If you're gonna be sticking around you will need to take things less seriously...

Real food is the simple answer, something you would eat for dinner or lunch!

A leg of lamb doesnt want to fit into my jersey pocket

Buttanut PB& Honey sachets, Macadamia Nut & Chocolate sachets work lekker. FruitBowl Peelers (Dischem/Checkers), dates and marmite sarmies. Iv lung and allergy issues, so got myself a Sport Science dietician who did the math to make sure I get in enough of everything (or not too much) with options that are safe of too much preservatives and other rubbish that’ll trigger my issues.

That’s why most cyclists are fat. Burn 1000cals eat 2000 because “I deserve it”.

Watch MTB races on TV, how many of the guys standing at the feeding (water) points shoveling potato’s should be doing less of that and pedaling a bit more.

Fully agree with this [emoji115][emoji115][emoji115]

As for the rest of the advice, hmmm. Biltong? Great to chew on while watching sport, not so great for fueling your ride. Bring the carbs, let’s ride!
