I've just done a simple histogram in Excel of the recorded finishing times on Racetec (sorry about the wonky colours, Excel was being a pain with transparent graphs):

Some more data:

I think this shows how much harder this year was than last year, and also puts into perspective the amazing results some people managed.

It also suggests that quite a few people may have missed the cutoff, which throws out the average and medians a bit.

Loverly work there dexterdent

just so it's clear that there's only one color to properly represent this year's conditions: brown.. ;)

Amazing work, thank you!

Now run a regression analysis and the x value (slope) will be the Racetec beta (or very close to).

Would be interesting to compare the results from this year to that of 2009 and 2010

Apart from the winning time / $ group which was only 2 min slower than last year - how they did that I don't know - that's some serious power in the lead group. I would suggest all other groups times on average would about 10% slow than 2018 so if you did a 3:20 (200 min) this year you would have maybe just gone sub 3 in 2018 weather conditions.

2009 the winning time was only 2:46 - I am very surprised at this years winning time - but in 2009 it also went over Boyes drive. On a personnel level I went about 1 min faster in 2009, but my position was 400 places higher somewhere in the 500s - 2009 versa somewhere in the 900s -2019 this years. Maybe it s been 10 years older or  at least 10KG heavier! I would suggest 2009 the wind / conditions were a bit worse.

On the way home I was thinking about this - may be counting tandems twice. I'll do some more analysis later this week - happy to share the data as well if someone is interested.

EDIT: Oh and I used <= instead of <. I think 03:00:00 should count as sub 3 :)

I started in $. I'd guess that more than a third of the bunch was involved or caught behind a crash in the first few hundred meters before even getting onto Nelson Mandela Boulevard. Spent the next hour chasing at full gas with a group of around 15 guys who were way out of my league. Got to about 20 seconds off back of the front bunch when they dropped me on Fish Hoek main road. They made it to the bunch and I was left to crawl along in the headwinds in no man's land with three other stragglers. Around Smits some more $ dudes caught us up and we hammered through the tail wind sections but our little bunch went to pieces though the cross / headwind section up to sun valley. Was down to 4 of us by the time we got to chappies and picked up some dropped riders along the way to suikerbossie. With all of us shattered, one of the Savages sat on the front most of the way down along the 12 apostles to home. Pretty humbling day out!

Sums up the race pretty well, though I think you got closer to the bunch than I did after trying to salvage a race after being stuck behind the crash.

I was still chasing that sub 3 at the end there... and it was really hard watching the Garmin going 2:59:58... 2:59:59... 3:00:00...  3:00:01...

Yeah, got so close but I was on my limit for that whole first hour. Not sure how much good I'd have been even if I'd made it back to the bunch anyway. Our little group had averaged 40km/h into the wind by the time I fell off the back in Fish Hoek and don't think I'd managed a sip of water in that time. Had also hoped to at lease salvage a sub 3 but alas. Thanks for all the pulls though.

Can't face one more person asking me how the Argus went!

that makes a bit of sense...lost 20mins over last year...despite the wind etc...so i can tell my long suffering wife that i really haven't got slower or older....phew...relief for a cyclist...

I was 15 minutes slower than last year -- 3:15 in 2018 put me in the top 10% of the field. 3:31 this year put me in the top 8%. I'm taking that as an improvement.

I remembered a funny thing from all the brake checking that we had -- bunch cruising along to Fishoek and I see a guy in front of me with a pair of those rubber testicles dangling from his saddle - Oh I'll just turn the gopro on and get a little shot of those - he had a slogan on his shirt too about balls ... next thing he's slammed on anchors and I nearly ended up with them up my nostrils.

Loved the analysis Dexterdent and made me feel better about failing to meet my 330 target - I rode a few seconds slower than last year (out of respect to the beast of a man from a few groups back who dragged me from suikerbossie home) and improved by 3300 places with a 3.48 - at my level giant improvement is easy - I dropped back a few groups as I felt my seeding was generous - last year was my first CTCT and I needed a repeat of those conditions to have any hope

On ebikes... It seems there was some inconsistencies...

Pulling into the first set of gates I was right next to an older woman on a giant ebike... Marshall immediately pointed it out and just said, "no E-bikes, sorry." she of course flipped and insisted she was only riding with kids, etc...

I felt for her, but also not... She would have got the sms just like I did... She clearly just thought she was above it...

However, after the minor protest, the Marshall did say he would speak to someone, etc etc... I wonder if they just made the allowance if someone pitched up?

Saw none in the alphabet soup I was in... Sure as **** would have grabbed on for a tow if I had!

My wife counted 4 in her group, a bit of a joke!
