shortly before latching onto your wheel and staying there till you explode

It's only on the steep climbs that they are not interested in sitting on my wheel. But when the wind blows, or there are miles and miles of rolling hills and flats with nowhere to hide, they like hanging with trusty old diesel me. Also, after a few hours out there in the heat, they seem to wilt and I can still keep at it.

On a side note, I actually feel sorry for the charities this year. With the entries not selling out they have lost the desperate cyclists looking for an entry no matter the cost. Obviously they still get the people that do it willingly but it would be interesting to know how this has adversely affected their selling of entries.

CTCT might have to have a revisit on their pricing, then they might sell all their entries once more.

Ah, now that would be lovely. Even just a price freeze that they advertise often will probably do the trick.

I don't think pricing is the big issue.

overcoming the inertia of the argus lite and the blown out 1 require more than one decent year to claw back.

I do also know that the gauteng component was a huge proportion of the entry. it would be interesting to see if the reduction in entries is proportional to local/out of town. The reason is say that is that if the whole shebang from jhb costs you R6/7k all in, then dropping the entries from R550 to R350 is not really going to sway you on coming or not.

I also think CTCT management are quite arrogant, never thought they could do anything wrong and have been caught out by reduced entries by surprise (I have no facts to base this on)

I think the biggest problem is the cost of accomodation in Cape Town has risen nearly 30% over the last two years due to international tourism influx as a result of the weaker ZAR thanks to JZ.

Plus of mine from JHB used to stay in a hotel in Greenpiont for the convenience now stay with the her folks to save on accomodation costs. It means the kids stay at home with their Nanny.

Cape Town is stupidly expensive place for a saffa to come on holiday

I think you are right on the money.

We recently had a big rowdy 21st birthday party next door and didn't feel like listening to it all night long, so we simply booked a room in a nice little boutique hotel in the City Centre and sneaked away for the night. It was bloody expensive, but what surprised me even more was just how expensive hotels in Cape Town became. (Living here, it is something I never had reason to discover.) Cape Town is expensive and definitely more so on Argus weekend.

I think booking something through AirBnB is the way to go.

I was initially going to drive down like we do every year, share costs with a mate including accomodation and everything. That would have set us back about 5k each for 5 nights down there.

last minute things changed, I'm now flying. I booked my flight tickets 2 sundays ago. They were already around twice as expensive as flight to CPT on normal days, by the thursday they had gone up R1000 each.

My mate that is flying down the friday and back the sunday paid crazy prices for his tickets.

Accomodation is the next big thing. We stay in fish hoek in what is probably the cheapest accommodation in the cape town. Anywhere else and costs go through the roof again.

Airlines used to take your bike for free, now they charge.

If I stayed in the cape I would not blink an eye to do the race, coming from up here it takes a year of putting money away and motivating to go again.

I dont even think they sold out on entries this year. Before they were over subscribed but this year its different...maybe it's the state of the economy or cost escalation weighing up...who knows.

Looking for advice on isotonic balancing and loading to ward off the cramps...I do suffer from cramps quite easily and I usually start getting the twitches by Fish Hoek/S'town....and suffer through from there with stops and starts....

Apart feasting on Rennies or riding with a drip, does anyone have any general advice....

No matter what I do I often run into this problem. Obviously if it’s hot make sure you’re drinking enough electrolytes. Something like Hammer’s endurolytes. I find things like Rehydrate which is excellent have too much sugar for me and sugar is one of my cramp triggers!

So... the best is to keep Crampease spray handy and use as necessary. Start with a squirt under your tongue when the twitches start. Works like a bomb.

Nothing replaces miles and intensity in the legs bru. L-Glutimine can also work on the ride on your bottle and you can preload with cramp block 4 days before as well. Drinking energy fluids all the time will assist as well but my first statement still holds. Good luck!

You're going to hate my advice! So be ready for the bad news!..............................The only thing that really works is to increase the length and the intensity of your training rides gradually to equal to the race. Every other trick only treats the symptoms. As for that, I believe in taking a SlowMag tablet for a day or three beforehand and on race day to hydrate properly. Not just energy drink, but also Rehydrate to keep your electrolyte balance right.

Hear you about the time in the saddle, doing a fair bit weekly but not the actual distance in single rides, just to stay limber, no podiums in mind, just finishing....loading with Magnesium right now and have Rehidrate and Rennies in my plan...just wondering if there others out there that have similar issues...thanks!
