ZASC Posted September 11, 2019 Share Hi, I've just bought a Silverback Splash 2 from Cycle Lab Fourways for R6900. I do not know anything about bikes. However, I am worried as I don't believe the sales person was very knowledgeable and might have steered me wrong. Firstly, I was told that this was the latest model but I cannot find the bike online. The latest one on Silverback is silver and mine is turquoise. I have searched tons of sites to find my bike and haven't as yet. I want to ride on the road and also a bit off road but do not want to spend more than R7000. I want something that I do not have to replace in the next five years or more. 1. Was this a good buy?2. How do I verify that it is the latest model?3. Which other brands should I look into?4. Where is the best place to purchase a bike in Johannesburg? That is well priced, has expert staff and good service. I am based in Fourways. Thank you in advance for your help.
Rich990 Posted September 11, 2019 Share There's nothing wrong with that as a starter bike and it will do what you need it to do, as you described above.Just go out and ride it! Hairy, BigDL and AdamA

piotter Posted September 11, 2019 Share Nothing wrong with it as a starter bike. This seller on the hub says it is a 2019 model, 2020 models of bicycles are being released left right and center so maybe that's why you can only find a silver one online. https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/381041-silverback-275/ BigDL and ZASC

Was this a good buy?You could probably get a bit better if you're wiling to buy used.2. How do I verify that it is the latest model? The short answer. Yes. It is a 2019 Silverback Splash. And I see no news of a 2020 model just yet. After some googling I've discovered that your bike (although slightly different in colours) Is both identical in frame construction and paint design scheme. Typically a 2019 bike will be announced at the end of 2018. The bike will be introduced and displayed at selected stores as a preview upon or even before the actual production of said bike. It is not uncommon for demo/floor model bikes to be slightly different in colour than those which will come off the product line. 3. Which other brands should I look into? This is a rabbit hole. But lets stick to your bike type and its intended purpose. With that in mind. Silverback, Titan, Momsen, Giant and Merida typically offer similar value bikes at this price point. There will be similarities and differences between them in many areas. But overall choosing between them will just come down to preference and a few hundred bucks. 4. Where is the best place to purchase a bike in Johannesburg? That is well priced, has expert staff and good service. I am based in Fourways. You'll get many different answers from many different people here. It all hinges on ones experience. One customer may rave about a certain lbs while another rants. Thank you in advance for your help. Uni Posted September 12, 2019 Share I have no opinion on Cyclelab or bike stores in your area however back in the day (2014) I bought a Silverback Splash 1 for R6700 and I happily rode that for 2 years. My sister has inherited the bike now and while she doesn't ride it that often, the other weekend I took it for a spin, and while the shifting might not be as smooth as what I've become accustomed to, the bike still does the job and I had a smile on my face. Ride it enjoy it. PS in your pic the saddle looks very low, make sure the bike fits you, that's more important..I had a bike shop let me, as a noob walk out buying a medium when i'm only 1.63 in height. MORNE Posted September 12, 2019 Share that doesn't look half bad for a bike in that price bracket imo. Hairy and BigDL
Me rida my bicycle Posted September 12, 2019 Share Looks like a good bike for the price. Don't look around any more, Murphy's law if you bought something no matter how great the deal was, you will find it cheaper???? As said above most important is fit, you need to be comfortable and be able to move around on the bike. BigDL
scotty Posted September 12, 2019 Share Decent entry level bike and looking at similar offers you got it at a good price with excellent warranty backup. If they did not do a bike fit then I suggest you get this done, hop on and enjoy. Sydd and BigDL
shaper Posted September 12, 2019 Share Your concerns are probably because of your lack of knowledge. The bike is a decent entry level bike and much better than the "Makro" bikes many go for as a first time. Silverback a very good name brand, you should not have any issues with the frame. Component parts such as chains etc wear out with use, so expect to change those in the next 5 years depending on how much riding you do. Go ride your new bike, enjoy it and have many happy smiles!! tinmug Posted September 12, 2019 Share Nice bike, and welcome to Bikehub. If you compare bicycles in a large bike shop you will see bikes with similar parts (brakes, shifter, derailleurs etc) fall mostly in the same price category. More expensive parts offer smoother braking, shifting etc, use more exotic materials and weigh less for those obsessed with grams. Some brands – notably Silverback, having roots in South Africa – cost less than other brands (i.e. Scott, Trek, Giant etc). +1 Me rida my bicycle said: get a good fitting done (this is normally provided for free by the shop you have purchased your bike from); this alone will make an enormous difference to your riding experience. Enjoy it. BigDL
