Not sure i agree that the UCI / Commissures should have intervened.

The riders are professionals and they know they race in all kinds of conditions and must adapt to the conditions.

Easy to say i suppose lying on my couch

.. in dry weather it probably would've been awesome to watch.. unfortunately when there is oil on the road in wet weather it becomes a different issue altogether...

And the major takeaway from todays stage is:

1) Disk brakes are no better than rim brakes. Nobody on disks gained ANY advantage on those wet descents

2) You need a mechanic with a power tool following you if you puncture ( on disk brakes) and want a wheel change. Wait, no that didnt work, did it?. He failed. Right in front of the whole world on live tv.

So what chance have you, 50km from home in the wet with your cute little 5mm allen key?

Nope. Nothing to do with the debate on brakes, everything to do with oily roads and first rains, thats all farm/rural inland area pretty much. So the roads see plenty heavy vehicle use.

Heavy vehicles that are notorious for leaking diesel and hydraulic fluid as a matter of course!

If that’s what you took away from today’s stage.....

UCI & ASO couldn't care less who falls, wins, loses, finishes, ends up in hospital ... they don't work for the riders, they work for sponsors and as long as the sponsors get their share of exposure, UCI & ASO get noddy badges on their scorecards. Much like gladiators, they don't care if the lion or the gladiator wins, they sell human drama.

Cracking lead photo by Cor Vos!

"Riders described Saturday’s opening stage of the Tour de France as like riding on a skating rink, the result of a combination of oily roads, heavy rain, wet road paint, and, apparently, a caravan float spewing soap bubbles

“I’ve never seen so many crashes in my life,” said NTT’s Max Wallscheid."

We must be careful to not fully over react and scream for heads to roll, but after the Jakobsen and Evenepoel crashes, one would think that people would start giving a little more thought to route safety.

It was good to see the riders showing solidarity today.

That list is ridiculous. I've never seen so many crashes in a stage.

After thinking a bit about the stage today, I'm pretty negative about Astana's little "attack" when the other riders were trying to neutralize the stage. Teams pulling crap like that is the reason why the whole peleton ends up racing in unsafe conditions and riders end up having unnecessary crashes. If Lopez didn't crash almost immediately, or another team or two followed their "attack", the unofficial race neutralization wouldn't have worked, and the list of guys that have crashed would have been much longer, and there could have been some far more serious injuries.

Remarkable save by team leader Lopez ⚠️

https://youtu.be/foPnGBy9iPc

I love the positivity but if that is a ‘save’ then you should see how much I’ve been ‘saving’ at Jonkershoek. Usually face first!

The opening paragraph of that cycling tips article:

Soap bubbles. WTF. That photo though, amazing.

Any opportunity to push an agenda hey haha

LOL

Let us wait. Its only day 1.

I wanna see those disk brake guys leave the rim guys behind on those mountain pass descents. I wanna see them brake later into the corner on the Champs Elysee and gain 50 meters every time the race turns.

I call BS. Face it. The king has no clothes. The top 3 contenders know it.

On a personal note I was in CWC today drooling over a scott foll which had disks. I thought, oh well, I gotta join the early adopters some time. It truly is a beauty, if you like big butt.

Have you seen the rear end on that gorgeous piece of porn. Front looks like Sofia Vergara. Back end Mrs Dlamini Zuma. ( HAt and all!)

Im pretty negative about how a number of morons ride down Hospital Bend ( oh how well named that is!) waving to mama at 70kph, EVERY SINGLE YEAR in the funride Champs,

However' thats risk appetite. Everyone has a different version.

Others ride into walls trying to gain a micro advantage on day 1 of a 21 day race. It is a deliberate attempt to gain advantage off the fear of your competitors. When it works ,its fun to watch from the couch.

When it fails, I do permit myself a wry smile....

I feel you are about 2-3 years late with this disk vs rim argument.
