Is 26er dead?

Pretty much in most aspects, but dead is relative. It's still a tyre size found on plenty kids, youth and smaller size bikes. Interestingly there's been a resurgence of 26r over the last year as people have been pulling out their old bikes from storage. This has led to some manufacturers/brands increasing percentage on stock.

As far as progressive geometry and 'modern' features on new bikes? Yes. Mostly.

Do people still ride them? Yes

Can you shred one? Absolutely yes.

BUT you will probably struggle find a new bike with current standards, geometry and features in 26". That is the reality.

only temporarily but in the next 10 years the industry will bring it back with much hype about how 700/29 is too big and your gravil bike (or whatever they pushing next)will just shred if you fit the new '660' wheels blah blah ????

I still ride a 26er on occasion. I had a commencal meta sx2 and I am sorry I sold it. That bikes geo was on point with most modern enduro bikes and it was so nimble.

Hell No !! - I found this frame a few years back, brand new, got it for next to nothing. Was a top end hardtail back in its day, Every time I upgrade my 29er it gets the hand me down parts, currently a 1 X 10 XO and soon 1 X 12 GX Eagle - so the RD will probably drag on the ground through the right hand bends

I’ve got 2 in my bike room.... actually 3 if I count my wife’s

They are “sleeping” waiting for the revival, although the one is a specialized with the old original style brain shock on the left side and with v brakes so it might be comatose

I tend to the view that while commercially, for the time being it's 'dead' that it won't stay that way forever. There are times when I really wished I was on a 26er instead of a 29er - on some quite technical trails and some events. I think it's only a matter of time until a new generation of younger bikers - who grew up with 29ers - rediscover the joy of a 26er on a tight and difficult trail. Then it will re-commercialised again.
