"The Sabana University Clinic, where he was being treated, announced that he had undergone an operation for a fractured femur, patella and chest trauma."

That really sucks. Hope he gets back to his best.

Seems he's had to have a back op. Journalist over there spoke with specialists who said the procedure being done is to ensure his quality of life going forward. Hope he recovers well and will be back on the bike soon

"Egan suffered a fractured vertebrae, a fractured right femur, a fractured right patella, chest trauma, a punctured lung and several fractured ribs in the crash.

"Doctors were able to medically pin his right leg and stabilise the vertebrae fracture in two separate surgeries last night. He is now in an intensive care unit where other potential secondary injuries are being managed, as well as his body’s response to the trauma.

Colombian newspaper El Tiempo, that surgeons stabilised the spinal fractures and placed an instrumentation between his T3 and T8 vertebrae, that specific injury worrying doctors the most.

El Tiempo also reported that Bernal has bleeding on his chest, and a further operation will take place to control that.

This is truly a concern.

This is so sad.

I am interested in how this happened, it's a big red bus. This is a top tier team, do they not have team cars in front and behind them on every training session?

I have the same questions? Naturally he looking down at that speed?

Horrible crash ... been a big fan. Waiting for news, that spinal injury sounds kinda serious.

I don't think its appropriate to post pics and videos of the crash 👎

Looking down…. Trying to copy Froomies stem breathing technique?

Seriously though, this is could be a career threatening event and most likely his 2022 season is history.

Cycling aside, I he recovers fully to lead a healthy life and makes a cycling comeback

I'd suggest he will take at least 3 years to come back from this, if ever.

With a pinned femur and spinal injury he can't exactly 'hop on the trainer' for a number of months and the rehab from those injuries will be extensive just to walk and function, never mind race at WT level.

I'm just glad he is alive and not reported to be paralysed or have severe brain injuries.

It's devastating news

By the sounds of it he could be happy to be alive!

Still so young, but with those injuries and the operations, I cannot see how he will be a WT rider again. (Please may I be wrong!) Hopefully this does not age well and he does recover fully to add to his already impressive palmarés!

In 2014 I was sprinting up Marine Drive in Blouberg on my hardtail. I was pushing hard, head down keeping a beady eye on the bike computer strapped to the bars. I looked up to find a misplaced Volvo that skipped a stop right in my path. Next thing I was pasted on the tar with a concussion and a minor fracture to my elbow, inducing a trip to the ER for CT scans. It happens in the blink of an eye.

2 years ago I had to conduct a funeral for a cyclist who was killed riding on a flat, straight road.

There were no cars up ahead so he was head down and going for it.

A lorry passed him and then a little way down the road they pulled over to answer a phone call. They stopped in the yellow line where he was riding and he didn't see them until it was too late.

I'm glad Bernal survived this and hope he is able to recover well enough to enjoy a full life. Returning to riding at any level would be an added gift.
