Lekker man ... what gear ratio in those mountains?

It wouldn't have mattered what ratio, I was pushing/carrying mostly. the terrain does not lend itsself to any kind of momentum/rhythm.

But I ran 32-18 as always.

the downs were fantastic tho.

I used to run a 32x20t on Table Mountain ... that may have gotten you up the "hills"

if you did that 89km ride on a downhill bike you are my new hero

I did indeed. But hold off on the hero worship. We were in France using ski lifts to get up the hills. So about 15km of that 89 is chilling on a lift enjoying the scenery.

The highlight is the GIGANTIC amount of descending you can do in a day. We had 4 days of 6000+m of descending. 3 of us did 8824m in 2015 and i know of at least one person (Theo Erlangsen current SA DH champ) who has done 11000m IN ONE DAY.

The day we arrived we only got on to the hill at 2.30 and still managed over 3000m of descending.

Don’t your hands get sore from all the steep descents?

My palms just under the thumb get incredibly sore even on short steep decents, never mind those long ones

How are your brake levers positioned ... more at a 45 deg or flatter / parallel with the ground?

Used to have a similar feeling till I started running my levers more parallel with the ground .... you tend to take more pressure on your palm vs your thumb and forefinger .... give it a spin if you are not currently doing so already.
