I think this article was well-measured. It's not merely a case of 'move on if you don't like it' - it's more a case of strava herding us all down a path we never signed up for.

Strava's biggest failing was offering a stellar product from the start and packing too much in. Now the other shoe's dropped and they're scrabbling to make this a sustainable business and like all social media (calling a spade a spade here), the users end up being the product and in doing so, the aforementioned herding is taking place.

The only choice each of us has as an individual is to vote with feet and wallets. Does that mean we need to tell everyone? I guess, that's a 'yes' if I'm a journalist. Otherwise, it's probably best for me to STFU and move along

excellent comment and agree

what i dont like is that i paid for a year worth of subs, and in this last year they've implemented all sorts of "opt-out" features that im not a fan of. I dont have a problem of disabling these features, but a strong point in the letter is exactly this "opt-out" nature of the product.

Seems a bit whingey.   Share what you do want, and share what you dont want to share.

And she can Strava a ride, share it, and still go slow and see the scenery?    Even adding crossfit (she did tell us afterall) etc.. share it or dont.   Use the metrics or not.

Or just stop using the platform altogether?

I can only imagine her crying on a TikTok when Donald Trump becomes president next year. 🤣

I subscribe for the past few year(must say the Momentum subsidy makes it an easier decision) and you have admit they have added a lot of new features over the past few year. Maybe you dont use them all, but I feel like I'm getting more for the same price and I'm ok with that. (Recover and Fatmap apps, and the mobile map tool has improved a lot. Plus I find route suggestions based on heatmaps very useful when riding /running while on holiday).

Kind of understand where she is coming from. Not every ride is a race, and not every ride is social. It is nice and lekker to ride with a group that like to have a chat today, coffee stop mid ride, and then the same group agrees that tomorrow is hammer day. It sucks though to join a group ride, and that one person makes a race out of it,just to beat a strava segment, then flag your ride when he bombed-out. Anyhow, be a lekkawaan, not a akkedoos🍻

If you dont like it dont use it, to draw up some long winded attention seeking letter saying why you dont is just attention seeking.

I dont make long posted letters cause I dont like avacado. Simply dont eat it.

Except that it's her job as a cycling journalist for an online publication to provide online content. The letter format was borderline satire and a follow-up to a series of "love-letters" written about bike products written by others. I'm sure bike journalists get tired of the same old "Ten best cycling destinations/gravel bikes/indoor trainers for 2024!" type of articles and would like to do something different now and then.

If it resonated for some people (seems like it did) then that was the point.

Let's be honest, we all know the guy that has to write "Chilled ride with Jeff" just to subtly emphasize to all his other strava bros that it was because Jeff was around that he rode slowly and otherwise he would have been crushing the segments like normal.
