There is actually a separate distinction for "Local Bike Shops" (example), but your point is well taken. There are many in the grey area between occasional/hobbyist reseller through to the full time from home/garage reseller. Many of whom are not currently tagged as a Business.

It's something we are actively looking at to find a better way forward.

Simply advertising an item doesn't imply desperation from the seller. It's disrespectful for BH members to propose offers 40 to 50% lower than the asking price. If unable to afford the asking price, make a reasonable offer instead of attempting to take advantage. Let's be realistic with our offers.

Maybe the asking price is too high in the first place.

Uhmmm, time to reflect on this thread, and the thoughts behind it.

I have an itch for a gravel bike.  For the purposes of my itch this needs to be at least 2x and have hydraulic brakes.  (not too fussed about 2x10 vs 2x11 vs 2x12)

Media hints at "big specials" for Black Friday .... so I start searching, and popping into various bike shops.

For all my support of @Titan Racing Bikes, they have opted to degrade the 2x bikes to cable disc brakes .... Like most brands the upper spec has gone the 1x route ....

Bike sizing ..... for a MTB'er this is a whole new can of worms ..... MOST brands have sizing charts based on S/M/L/XL, with me being a M in most, but on the cusp of S with two brands .... 1,75m  Now go look on the Hub for a secondhand one .... and it is "54cm" and similar ....  NO, I dont have any prior experience with bike sizes in cm, so LOST on this one ....

Price .... So the 2x options with cable disc brakes .... Couple of options in the low 20's on brand new bikes.  Ask for 2x with hydraulics, then the prices start low 30's, though a couple of options comes in just below 30 after discount.

I remind myself ...... this is an itch, not a serious bike ....

So I scroll through the classifieds .....

1. WOW .... so many adds are so poorly worded that you dont know what they are selling.

2. Low balling .... I am looking at the current prices in store, and the discounts being offered (not black friday, just eager sales staff) ...... in this market segment most/many adds on the Hub are at 70 to 85% of the current new prices.

Now we know what the prices did the last 2 or 3 years .... so it is very possible that the adds are at 50 to 60% of the original purchase price.

But if I now look at the current new price, and then offer 50% of this amount for a 2 or 3 year old bike then I may well be branded a "low baller" .....

O-well, I have a rusty old steel wire brush to use for the itch in the mean time .....

i still rate their deal on the Carbon Comp as an excellent one

Id then wait for a couple of these to come up - and presto you have a semi decent bike to gravel with.

The tire clearance on the Switch is really good, mountain bike tyre good.

Have you used these cable to hydraulic units ?

Curious to know how these would compare on the road.  Coming down Bainskloof or Franschhoek ?  Rather, more importantly, if you need to quickly stop in traffic to not T.bone an absent minded driver ....

Certainly hope this does the trick .....

EDIT - a quick search shows this really works well, at least it gets goid reviews.

Any SA distributors ??

ive never tried them, but the mechanics make sense, there is literally no lag on the line, so its an immediate hydraulic actuation. You never have to bleed lines etc

There is a minor weight penalty, but vs the price of replacing the entire groupset, a decent solution.

You called? 😎

There is a Ltd Edition Switch running around Cape Town with a conversion on that the owner is very happy with. Let me check if I can find the details for you.

dont let cables be the deal breaker. honestly, people make a whole big deal out of it and its nonsense. yes, they're not as good as hydraulics, but we've ridden rim brake road bikes for generations. friends do gravel and road races with cable disks. i run v-brakes on an old gravel bike. MTB'ers rode v-brakes for ages.

what IS a deal breaker is paying over 20k for a bike with cable discs. that is daylight robbery.
another deal breaker should be the crankset. Titan and Giant put those FSA omega cranks on there. Good luck finding a BB, and you'll need one regularly.

PS. i saw a lovely deal on a Diverge go up today.
