Thanks for this link. Tried it this morning. Started with 70g/h and chucked all the sugar for an hour and half effort into my bidon. Added one hydration tablet for some salt and flavour. Tasted pretty good and worked well. No stomach issues and did not feel hungry at all afterwards. Definitely taking this method further!

I've just ordered some of this to try.

I ordered the Sisu drink. They delivered within 72 hours. Used it today on a training run. Just the drink to fuel an easy 2 hour run. I mixed it with 8 scoops so about 80 grams of carbs. Not too sweet and I felt really good. This will be my drink of choice for a while.
And, it’s relatively well priced.

Doesn't matter if you are a slowpoke or a racer, all of us are unable to digest more carbs than what we are burning and your performance will improve if you find your maximum ingestion rate.

You need multiple types of carbs to utilise all your absorption pathways. I used to up the recommended dosage of my bottles, and also add maltodextrin, but it throws the electrolytes and flavour profile out of whack and adding stuff throws the carb balance. Currently using SiSu Nutrition which is a local brand designed with high carb bottles in mind. Did over 700g total over 6 hours at Velddrif and plan to do higher rates at upcoming gravel ultras.

P.S. Some pro's are calling bike racing a race to see who can eat the most, and it's (theoretically) why all the records are falling...

"I was nonstop eating. I don't feel like eating anything else today, to be honest. When you're already going full gas for the first 80k and you're already eating full gas like it's the final, and then you have to continue eating to the end, it's pretty rough."
- Tom Pidcock, Strade Bianche

I visited a nutritionist earlier this year whilst trying for Sani. She was incredibly helpful and gave me some great advice. One of the things she told me to do, to help with the change in temp in SA after training in an Irish winter, was to up my carb intake to 150g per hour during sani and the 2 weeks before (90g an hour in training). I did this by chowing SIS Beta fuel jelly bar things and complementing them with a mix in my bottle, as well as lots of carbs at the water points, but as I’m a slow rider, I had to carry a lot of nutrition each day and it was hard to eat every 20 minutes. Having said that, I definitely felt better during and after the rides than in a previous Sani, but it was bloody hard work keeping the nutrition levels up.

Sorry, meant to share this the other day. This was just a quick research/arrange from info on websites. Some of it was adjusted to fit my rubric. I was looking for a cheap high carb drink ready to go that wouldn't kill the bank. If you have a high training load it does start costing a lot of money just fueling training, never mind recovery drinks etc.

I think this chart highlights excellently the gap in the market that lead to SiSu being developed. A mix that was formulated with 100g carb bottles in mind at R13.50 / 50g carbs. That's before even looking at other non-sensible additions such as artificial antioxidants or protein or even using slow absorbing carbohydrates in other mixes...

honestly, 100grams of carb in a single bottle will send 90% of the population straight to the porta loo. So it is a small gap they are filling on people wanting 100grams a bottle.

Another option to up the carb intake in your bottles is Biogen Pure Carbs, it's hard to find though. It's not  marketed as an endurance product and is part of their core range for some reason but it is unflavoured maltodextrin that you can add to your current drink mix to add more carbs without affecting the taste too much.

This is not an advert....

I own a small nutrition brand called H2Sport. It is not aimed at the top end racing market, or those who demand large carb intake. Our research has concluded that a large portion of riders are unable to absorb significant amounts of carbs, at least without any gastrointestinal discomfort. The thinking was that many riders like to eat on the bike, often this includes sweets, dates, fruit, bars etc, so by removing sucrose and fructose we enable the consumption of these types of foods without adding to potential stomach issues. Also, there is the added health benefit of limiting sugar intake when using the product.

The result was a drink with 26.14g carbs per 750ml bottle. Carbs from Maltodextrin and Dextrose 50/50 split. The all important magnesium, sodium and potassium numbers are comparable to other products out there, better in some cases. Most importantly the pricing is good. At R275 per 700g tub (23 servings), the cost works out at R12.00 per bottle (friends discount always applies....).

I took on the product as it worked for me doing long distances, stage races etc with the added benefit of all natural ingredients at a good price. For me the big benefit is the ability to smash the food you want to eat, whilst still getting carbs and good electrolytes from the drink at a reasonable price.

Now I just need to market the brand properly and get it out there.

At the risk of sharing a GCN video, here's a GCN video on DIY fuel.  🙃

I made the rocket fuel bottle and the rice cakes, and golly are both really good. The drink is really nice. I used caramel sugar as that's all I had and it's a ride highlight really. The MCT powder makes a huge difference. Calculate the energy in the bottle and consume accordingly. I used a 1:1 mix of sucrose (caramel) and maltodextrin, so it's not too sweet

Couldnt you buy 2kg of fructose and 2kh maltodextrin, measure out whats required. Add some lemon juice for taste.

Cheap?

You could. and many have.

uh mean you can also just get ingredient list for coke and start a zillion dollar drink company.

Maurten have 5 ingredients, can;t be that hard to replicate in your kitchen, go for it!

same with rehydrate

(italics was to show that while it seems simple, getting it right is difficult)
