And 10 000 signatures on a petion helps nada, its just to distract you away from the politician to give him space to go for lunch 

 

As I have it you are allowed to cycle on the section of the N1 until the Marine drive turn-off, after that it becomes a freeway and you are not allowed to cycle further onwards.

Also the reason people cycle on that section of the N1 is not because its fun dodging heavy traffic, it is because they get robbed on the alternative routes and until recently the N1 was the only "save-ish" option, so banning people from cycling on that part of the N1 is not going to reduce the attacks.

True, banning them is never going to reduce the risk.

But if its against the law to ride on that section of the road then the easy cop out will be to ban you permanently, and not fix the attackers. Politicians and the feds will see that as a reduction in attacks, therefore they did their job correctly.

All they actually do is remove the targets 

Dont get me wrong, Im an not against shooting the crims when you get attacked - I believe people need to earn pain to learn a lesson. Im just being realistic as to what the authorities will end up doing

But it's not. You are legally allowed to cycle on that stretch. The muggers are only adding that extra danger to an already sketchy piece of road, which is sad to say, safer than the dedicated cycling route.

It's like getting rear-ended by some idiot, and your insurance turns down your repair claim because your car's tyres were worn past the tread markers.

Ok, as long as its not illegal then they'll have to help fix the problem

It stops being a highway at one of the earlier bridges. I think at the marine drive bridge and the speedlimit is 80kph.

Yesterday morning two Durbanville cyclists narrowly avoided a hijacking at this bridge when the two perps could not cross the road fast enough to get to them. Both perps had their hoodies drawn over their faces and at least one had a bottle in his hand.

I've heard unconfirmed reports of at least three other cyclists who were not as lucky and fell victim to the robbers. One person reported that whilst at the Woodstock SAPS, they could locate the phone at the shacks at the bridge, only to be told by the SAPS member it was too dangerous to go there, and that there are too many fields around. I mean WTF, this is not on........

Went for a little road ride on Sunday to get my legs moving again after Munga and was shocked at how cr@p it was. Aggressive drivers, drunk rugby bros around Greenpoint, pampered kids revving engines that no one can afford to see if it really is 0-60 in a fartbeat .... Jesus wept.

I got hooted at on the little climb out of Camps bay for not riding close enough to the cars lining the left hand side by some some corpulent, high blood pressure, boozy lunch, tight belt digging into his swollen belly above his E.D. afflicted undercarriage who wanted to squeeze his 3 million rand narcissus mobile past me .... so that he could wait in the traffic jam ahead. He got the more caustic edge of the mamilian tongue as he got left behind.

Plotting a route back avoiding what we euphemistically call "hotspots" but which are really zones of lawlessness is a fear inducing nightmare. 

Had the highfalutin language of the NMT document distributed by the CoCT in mind as a MyCiti thundered past me at 70kmph to my 40 - thought about sending the Garmin tail light footage to them but watched my "What's the point?" reaction that is the inevitable defence against the irresitible force of "the economy" or whatever justification we give for this utterly unsustainable and dehumanising k@kshow that is modern urban living.

I love road riding as much as I love gravel and the trails but I don't think I'm going to be spending much time on the road bike this December - I think it's Tyberberg for me over December - and zwift for intervals --- how sad is that.

IT's Monday morning and I miss the desert winds and the roads that stretch empty and forever.

I rode on the cycle path from Sunningdale down to Woodbridge where I stopped for a minute or three and watched some absolute kegs drain over the sandbanks for what seemed like two rugby fields in distance. For a moment there I considered taking up surfing again.

Then I turned back and headed north on the cycle path again all the way through Melkbos and did some laps at the Duynefontein loop before cycle-pathing back to Sunningdale again. I got a lekker 66k ride in.

I just can't justify riding in the road anymore. I so want to do a Victoria drive ride again, but not while Frikkie, Fanie, Pietie and Vusi are all down from up-country, driving their vrrrr-pahs like a bunch of twat-waffles seeking attention and vloeking at anything looking like a cyclist.

Can people just circulate on these same groups that its not safe to ride there currently? Is it stubbornness or Ignorance? 


There is a ‘viable’ alternative as someone already mentioned (via Berkley and Amazon) yes its a detour and likely has its own issues yet to be unearthed. But still.
 

I see people riding in/out from lower church at least 2-3 times a week while sitting there for that short bit. I always wonder to myself if they are oblivious, just blind to their surroundings or perhaps think they are Chuck Norris?  Why even risk it? None of the guys/gals I see look like commuters either. Not worth the risk.

my guess is they just don't know... what PPA or SafeCycling could probably do is erect signs like we have at certain robots on the Cape Flats/Townships warning of high crime and or hijacking area. Even if its just on the light poles

We rode on the N1 on saturday because I had a session I can only do on kloof/glen, on the way down we rode with the flow of cars, on the middle/right side of the left lane, so that it's not so easy for these oxygen thieves to surprise us from behind the bushes, on the way back, going under the bridge it was dodge AF, there was at least 5 guys behind the pillar/rail, and one guy that went to cross right in front of us. Same thing we just went full gas there (50kph on the way there, 43 on the way back 🥵), quite in the middle of the left lane. Not great for our reputation towards the motorists, but only way to keep relatively safe.

If I understand correctly most of those incidents are on the road on top of that bridge, leading to woodstock right ?

My wife told me the city was going to take over management of the trains network over the state, isn't there a bit of hope there ?

There was actually a police van parked (with 3 officers) on the embankment in question this afternoon around 5pm. 

The real question is whether there'll be one tomorrow morning when I drive past again...
