Please can you try and draw a line of Google Maps showing how you get across? I have looked various times and cannot work out a way to get across from one side to the other. Berkley Road new bridge to Paarden Eiland?

It was posted in another thread “Cape Town danger areas” but here you go 2 options

I heard a report of a group of cyclists, with a support vehicle, who got attacked shortly after the above incident. The perps were so brazen, they did not even try to hide, just stood there next to the road whilst pelting the passing cyclists with bottles, probably in an attempt to bring one or two down in order to rob them.

I'm starting to think there is absolutely no interest from SAPS to get this situation under control.

this, the one report says guys were attacked on route to town, then on their way from the same guys were ready to attack them again...

so with no consequences for these guys they'll continue to do as they please...

So my question of earlier again. How long before someone gets gatvol and decides to take matters in own hand, what will the reaction of SAPS be then? Rock up in droves to arrest the person trying to protect his or someone else's life?

Throwing bottles at passing cyclists in order to bring one down can be construed as attempted murder, as it can be foreseen that a person could possibly be killed by the action of the bottle thrower.

I fear there is going to be a tragedy on that stretch if there isn't some sort of intervention soon.

I raced the rain home. Toyed with the idea of running the gauntlet with the north easter at my back and thought better of it. Took slightly less risky route over railway bridge past good hope center and set pr on the M4 instead.

A good friend of mine and owner of a bikeshop is talking of a protest ride.

Get some more PR on this... the political blame game is the absolute shackle on this. No responsibility until its one of their own. There's lots of parties involved here, and perhaps the PR is whats needed...

I agree with Mamil, this is a tragedy in the making.

I would suggest the cyclists who got attacked with the bottles go lay a charge of Attempted Murder at SAPS, as there is a real possibility that a cyclist being hit with a bottle could be killed, either from the hit by the bottle, or he could lose control and end up before a passing vehicle. At the very least, it is Assault GBH, and the SAPS must open the case. If there are multiple cyclists, they should insist that a case be opened for each and every one. SAPS cannot just ignore this, as it would affect their crime stats.

nothing is going to change until one of the thieves gets shot, I hope this happens sooner rather than later. Unfortunately we could see recently that a cyclist losing his life because of road damage doesn't get relevant authorities to fix the issue very quickly, so if they cause some drama on the highway we'll be the only ones sad about it. I really really hope we get some kind of access back to town quickly, in my opinion doing a 1000 detours is not a solution, because you'll still have to ride through woodstock, which is notorious for being a place where cyclists get smashed with bricks (also it's quite a big detour, if I do go through the interchange towards voetreker I might as well go ride constantia side).

This morning shortly before 6am I was attacked on the Woodstock bridge,  I have very little recollection of the incident other than seeing a guy running towards me seemingly brandishing a knife, and the next moment waking bleeding in the middle of the road.   Fortunately all they took was my phone from my jersey pocket.

To the three cyclists who stopped and helped me get to hospital, I will be eternally grateful.

Riding around the peninsula on a Sunday morning used to be favourite Sunday excursion.  I guess I will have to find another route now

I dont live in Cape Town anymore but am following the 2 threads on this out of sympathy for fellow cyclists.

i also follow the Cape Town Mayor on Instagram and am always impressed with his hand on on the ground approach to problems so am surprised that nothing is happening?
What about approaching his office directly ?
