So bleak this - That's Tour du cap, boland 100 miler and the gravel monster - I entered them all. Think it's about 4 or 5k all in but the bigger loss is my springtime into fun ride world  champs season  which now needs substantial revision

Seems no good deed goes unpunished, the thanks you get for supporting local road events...

Whatever you think of the company very bad news for the local riding scene if these races also drop off the calendar, not really something the local riding scene can afford.

(And again I am annoyed by the apathy of local riders not supporting the Giro del Mar organisers but that is my issue to deal with 🙃)

Feel the same here ... got the wind knocked out of the sails! Maybe I'll join a bowling league rather.

Durbie Dash might just help to ease the hurt a bit .... and also a World Champs seeding event.

99er seems to be stepping up their MTB and Gravel game the last few years.

Not sure, but think the PPA event early in 2026 is just road.

Seems Giro del Mar is already cancelled.

"Point to point" racing adds a level of logistics many casual riders dont want to deal with.

That said, the events scene is looking very bad ..... we loved the plaas-bazaar events in the Boland (MTB) ..... hardly any tried again after 2020 ....

everyone is either juggling cash flow or completely immune to it. Thats the WC. Schools MTB league has a higher average value per bike than the Sub Vets and Vets categories. If a business has cash flow issues then its a continuous juggling act where if one ball falls the whole lot follows. This is the reality facing small business and its tied to the macro economic space the country is in thanks to the continuous and tightening communist ideology the baffoons in government want to press home. It will get a lot worse before it gets better. I don't blame De Villiers for trying. Seemed like a genuinely passionate bloke wrt to the cycling events.

Fair comment. I think for a lot of people its "there but for the grace go I".

The sad thing is the impact this is going to have on international entries in future. This year I had three friends from Germany, and we had the full  German Female Pro team at the TdC. My friends have also re-entered for '26. Now none of them are coming, which also reduces international riders for the CTCT which is 2 days after the TdC.

The road running scene is bursting, (from my view in the Wcape). There's a mix of club run events with volunteers and events companies with paid staff and profit motives (and some hybrid). Many races are getting sold out in advance, as they hit capacity on permitting. For instance the gun run next weekend has 8000 people just for the 21km @R300 and 6500 for the 10km @R220. Both sold out. This is managed by a pro events company for years, and has solid sponsors.

Road cycling is just not that easy to pull off, otherwise we'd see more players here. Clubs organising their own events/charity organisations seem to have mostly disappeared.

Very true.

Our bi-weekly park runs often reach even permit limits.  And YES, Stellenbosch officials regularly show up to check the event and permit compliance.  Have seen them cap day entries and turn away people at two recent events ... simply have to enter online to ensure an entry

I entered the Gun Run 21km when it opened up.  It took all of 7 days to sell out the 10 000 permitted entries.

Then we look at cycling that is advertising entries until the day after the event ...

Only 3 non-" PPA/WP league"  road events left around CPT (Winelands, 99er and Durbie Dash) -

PPA has 2 outside of the Cycle Tour and their irregular Paardeberg Funrides.

Not quite agreeing with @ChrisF on logistics being the reason Giro del Mar was cancelled - I suspect the whole format is dead, no demand for road stage races anymore. I predict the last remaining funrides will soon go the same way, even if the demand is there the costs of hosting these type of events are skyrocketing.

I guess luckily the WP road league is still fairly healthy, seems that is the way to go, minimalist & cheap, just racing.

this is really sad news. 😥

I took part in this year's race with three friends. We flew in from Germany for the Tour du Cap and the CTCT. My friends enjoyed SA and the race so much that they bought entries for 2026 the first week that they were back in Germany.

We were planning on buying flight tickets and booking accommodation this week actually. 🫠

Hi Diether, what about the Tourdeboland (on https://cyclotourism.co.za/) for your DE friends? It also runs during the week prior to CTCT and adds a fun tourism element, sans the podium.
