Louis Cason is from JP Smith's office. He has been active in replying to my mails, and informing me of his correspondence with the two Government entities, Dep of Transport and Transnet.

Likewise. He was full of excuses and I told him exactly that. It's very easy for them to shift the blame. I don't give them 55 excuses when I pay my rates and taxes

Can I suggest two route options once you come off the bike path to get into town.
1. Through Paarden Eiland and cross the m5 interchange using the pedestrian sidewalk if you are not comfortable riding in the road that will take you to Voortrekker road which you can then use to get into town. I feel safe because it’s always bumper to bumper traffic there so vehicles are traveling much slower.
2. The other option is from Lagoon beach turnoff go up to Koeberg road and through the residential area behind Ysterplaat Airforce Base, you will come out on Sable Road proceed towards the N1 where you can take the Century City train station ramp through the residential area of Kensington & Maitland and again you will arrive at Voortrekker into Town. Will try ride it or map a route for you and post it here sometime.

I have been in contact with various city officials and I believe the ball is now rolling and action will be taken. Let's see what happens over the next 2 weeks...

Ive seen an action plan and officials made resposible... 2 weeks ago (19th Nov).

I still believe something will be done, but the turnaround time is very disappointing and costing/endangering many a folk.

I don't want to share the email responses that I have had. Apart from the officials who push the blame elsewhere there is a specific task team who have been assigned to this.

I am getting too old and cynical to believe anything politicians and "officials" tell me.

I have heard of way too many commissions, think tanks, committees and plans over the years that amounted to a bit of visible window dressing for the media..........that lost steam..........and reverted back to square one.

I, for one, expect them to do the very same thing their track record shows!

Turn the clock back to the 80's and 90's.  There was a steel baracade separating the incoming and outgoing lanes along what is now the 80km/h section into town, from the N1.

MANY accidents where cars went over the steel and nasty head on collisions .... Many a newspaper headline ..... NO REAL ACTION ....

Then one weekend a family member of a politician was badly hurt in one of these accidents .... never has a concrete wall been installed that quickly !!!!

Lets hope it does not come this, that a politician's family gets mugged before anything real is done.

For now, just a stupid political game of pass the blame ....

Perhaps we can get PPA (or the other officials in your above chats) to arrange special permission for cyclists to go via the harbour ?

I used to do that before they tightened security. Guards would let me pass, but no longer. Road not great, broken sections, uneven bumps, large trucks and grit, small stones, etc looks like a puncture zone everywhere - but I never got mugged.

Received communication from Transnet, they are also hard at work to resolve this issue, and any and all info they get will help strengthen their case in their application for the eviction of the illegal squatters on their land.

So please, share it wide with anyone who was attacked along this stretch at any time, to send it to liz@pedalpower.org.za with the SAPS case number. She will then forward it to the relevant role players.

here is option 1 folks. You can either take it down Voortrekker road as suggested or like I did tonight to Berkeley Road past Amazons new offices and carry on to the Salt River circle. Tonight I rode the sidewalk across the Interchange sharing it with pedestrians.

There was a lot of indignity and anger/resentment due to the spate of attacks and apparent lack of action on the authority's side. It just needed to be brought under the attention of the right decision makers. Looks like we got a bit of attention and traction here, so let's try and keep it going, less it peters out over the holiday period. (the criminals are not going to go away on holiday though)

Keep the pressure on without getting rude or too aggressive towards the persons who reacted and got involved with trying to resolve this situation. They are also only a cog in the wheel and has protocols to follow. We can easily lose their sympathy or willingness to assist if we rub them up the wrong way.

I would suggest we keep the following people honest in their efforts to resolve this issue as they are the ones who responded to my mails and got the ball rolling. Keep any mails to them civil.......

1) Firhana.Sam@transnet.net

2) liz@pedalpower.org.za

3) Louis.Cason@capetown.gov.za

The following ones could be cc'd into any mails send to the above.

1) bcreecy@parliament.gov.za

2) alan.winde@westerncape.gov.za

3) mayor.mayor@capetown.gov.za

The Berkeley Road route has been working for me for the last couple of months, final destination being Rosebank.  However, although one can do the sidewalk part without difficulty, it requires patience and politeness.  It is a heavily used pedestrian route (there is a school at the bottom end) and you need to be respectful of its purpose.  Nevertheless, there is a strong case to be made to the city that it it needs to be dramatically upgraded, because it is not even adequate for the pedestrian traffic.  It is poorly lit, very narrow and crosses three high-speed slip roads, which are dangerous to pedestrians and cyclists.  Does anybody know how one can start the process of motivation for this to be developed into a proper NMT route?

Yeah that is why I originally said use the road when it’s peak traffic and vehicles are moving much slower. That use to be my regular route from work in Kenilworth to Killarney back in the day.

agree lots of patience when using the side walk, a light and bell will go along way. I’ve seen a “traffic marshal” stationed there before I guess that is just for before and after school to get the kids across the road.

This might be a good place to start:

Option 2 slightly longer if you don't fancy your chances with the M5 interchange / sharing the walking path with pedestrians.
