There was a lot of indignity and anger/resentment due to the spate of attacks and apparent lack of action on the authority's side. It just needed to be brought under the attention of the right decision makers. Looks like we got a bit of attention and traction here, so let's try and keep it going, less it peters out over the holiday period. (the criminals are not going to go away on holiday though)

Keep the pressure on without getting rude or too aggressive towards the persons who reacted and got involved with trying to resolve this situation. They are also only a cog in the wheel and has protocols to follow. We can easily lose their sympathy or willingness to assist if we rub them up the wrong way.

I would suggest we keep the following people honest in their efforts to resolve this issue as they are the ones who responded to my mails and got the ball rolling. Keep any mails to them civil.......

1) Firhana.Sam@transnet.net

2) liz@pedalpower.org.za

3) Louis.Cason@capetown.gov.za

The following ones could be cc'd into any mails send to the above.

1) bcreecy@parliament.gov.za

2) alan.winde@westerncape.gov.za

3) mayor.mayor@capetown.gov.za

here is option 1 folks. You can either take it down Voortrekker road as suggested or like I did tonight to Berkeley Road past Amazons new offices and carry on to the Salt River circle. Tonight I rode the sidewalk across the Interchange sharing it with pedestrians.

The Berkeley Road route has been working for me for the last couple of months, final destination being Rosebank.  However, although one can do the sidewalk part without difficulty, it requires patience and politeness.  It is a heavily used pedestrian route (there is a school at the bottom end) and you need to be respectful of its purpose.  Nevertheless, there is a strong case to be made to the city that it it needs to be dramatically upgraded, because it is not even adequate for the pedestrian traffic.  It is poorly lit, very narrow and crosses three high-speed slip roads, which are dangerous to pedestrians and cyclists.  Does anybody know how one can start the process of motivation for this to be developed into a proper NMT route?

Yeah that is why I originally said use the road when it’s peak traffic and vehicles are moving much slower. That use to be my regular route from work in Kenilworth to Killarney back in the day.

agree lots of patience when using the side walk, a light and bell will go along way. I’ve seen a “traffic marshal” stationed there before I guess that is just for before and after school to get the kids across the road.

This might be a good place to start:

Can I suggest two route options once you come off the bike path to get into town.
1. Through Paarden Eiland and cross the m5 interchange using the pedestrian sidewalk if you are not comfortable riding in the road that will take you to Voortrekker road which you can then use to get into town. I feel safe because it’s always bumper to bumper traffic there so vehicles are traveling much slower.
2. The other option is from Lagoon beach turnoff go up to Koeberg road and through the residential area behind Ysterplaat Airforce Base, you will come out on Sable Road proceed towards the N1 where you can take the Century City train station ramp through the residential area of Kensington & Maitland and again you will arrive at Voortrekker into Town. Will try ride it or map a route for you and post it here sometime.

Option 2 slightly longer if you don't fancy your chances with the M5 interchange / sharing the walking path with pedestrians.

I like option 2 better than the M5 interchange which I have been using in both directions for some time now. Thanks. I'll use that when headed out to melkbos and the gravel out north

Descending Constantia Nek this morning on the Hout Bay side, came across a bag of cement that had been dropped on the road, causing a hazardous raised section. This is just after the sharpish right hand turn. I have logged a service request on the COCT site.

I would suggest the cyclists who got attacked with the bottles at Woodstock Bridge this morning, go lay a charge of Attempted Murder at SAPS, as there is a real possibility that a cyclist being hit with a bottle could be killed, either from the hit by the bottle, or he could lose control and end up before a passing vehicle. At the very least, it is Assault GBH, and the SAPS must open the case. If there are multiple cyclists, they should insist that a case be opened for each and every one. SAPS cannot just ignore this, as it would affect their crime stats.

This has now moved past the point of just a mugging/robbery, there is now serious intent to injure cyclists, and it is premediated/planned and executed.

I wonder if it's warranted to give that "lady" a good old fashioned hiding in this instance should the opportunity present itself? Mmmm.

It's shocking to read between this and that other thread how bad things are getting on the roads in Cape Town. Society has degenerated rapidly over the last couple of years.

I dont thinks its this. Society has always been sh!t. People are sh!t.
Bikes have just reached a point where they cost more than cars…and they are easy pickings. What changed is, the skollies and the syndicates who pay them also know now. If bikes were macro bike money, i doubt there would be as many incidents. They would be aiming their talents at the next big/easy score i stead.
i bet you everyone in a VW or Toyota forum also thinks the world has gone to sh!t😅

Ya, I suppose it's true. This is why I prefer to ride on closed trails.

There is already a very good route through made for NMT. My city cycle lane to Woodstock. Up onto church street bridge and a cycle lane down Albert Road.

Good route just not policed or maintained. Any new route would need policing and maintaining so all they really need to do is sort the existing one out.
