how do I get my 9 year old daughter interested in riding her bike again ?

She used to love riding, then all of a sudden got really scared to ride, basically goes into panic mode gripping the bars white knuckled. This on normal paved roads.

I'm thinking of getting her to do a short ride with me to the local takeaway and her an ice cream whilst we're there, but its the getting her on the bike part that is going to be an issue.

I think you're on the right path with bribery.

I'd look at why she is scared to ride, you can trick her onto the bike but if she goes into a defensive mode on the bike then you'll never really solve it without tackling that first.*

*I'm not a child psychologist, am just guessing really.

tried tackling the why, I'm not getting anything out of her.

I do know she fell last year, but that came as a result of being scared on the bike. The fall just made it worse.

My thinking is, if I can bribe her back onto the bike, get her to do something "fun", she will gain confidence back.

We want her to get confident so that we can go and do some easy trails together as a family.

I also had to get clever with my middle daughter (7 now).

I run while she rides our 5-6km ride that passes an ice cream stop half-way. We don't go off road at the moment. Edit: she rides brilliantly, but she's much more confident and happier if she knows I'm next to her.

My 9 year old daughter loves Huddle Park in Joburg. I've learnt that she's a lot more excited to ride if we drive there instead of ride there.

My eldest also went through a stage like this, then I was on Insta one night and showed them (her and her sister) a video about a little kid smashing some trail and then she seemed keen to get back on. I started slowly With her and there we go.

She tackled a 4km trail ride the other day (part of a kiddie triathlon) She was loving it me not so much, I was busy kakking myself cause I had to do some "on the spot" training cause madam didn't know where to position pedals when negotiating rocks and tree stumps. The last thing I needed was her to fall. Anyway she finished (both of them actually) they now classify themselves as Triathletes....

Cheers guy, thanks for the tip... Luckily she's not a wine mom she'll be on the track probably taking lotsa pics and making sure the girls smash the course and have fun. Then it will be our turn, I'll try my best for her to get some airtime over the jumps.

Any suggestions on knee and elbow pads for an almost 3 year old? Either that or mommy is going to put my boy in bubble wrap before allowing him onto the next balance bike (progression from plastic balance scooter to mini bike with rear brake)

Took my nephews out to Modderfontein yesterday for their first ride on their "new" bikes, was cold and rainy, but they loved it....

Those bikes look a little big for them....

Have a look at the skateboard section in a shop and they have children's knee and elbow pads.

They are a little, but it's what we could get, I have put shorter stems, zero offset seat posts and moved the seats as far forward as they can go, I know its not ideal, but alas, that is what we have
