capediver Posted November 30, 2020 Share I don’t even lock my car when I park at the cycle track. And riding anytime of the day or night there is zero risk coming from a human source. An Oryx running across the cycle track in the middle of the night is about as wild as it gets. Riding on public roads though is a different story. Firstly it’s actually illegal if road speed limit is above 60km/h although it’s never enforced and if a cop does come past you he’ll just pop your bike in his Prado with you and escort you to the track or ride behind you with flashing lights until you get there. But the Expats do NOT drive well here and it’s not worth riding on the Public roads for a long ride, I’d only ride 5-10km to get me onto the cycle track. Although I’m not aware of any motorists hitting cyclists you just don’t see people riding on the roads like other cities.First time I went to ride at the Yas Marina F1 track, I asked the guy checking cards at the gate where the lockers were so I can lock my bag away while I ride...he checked me out as if I was crazy.."No lockers, just leave your bag next to the track over there, boss"!!! Edit: In the heat of summer, its not unusual to come a cross an unlocked and empty car parked outside the local cafe with the engine running to keep the A/C on...! Anyway he gets back and the box is gone! That evening he gets a call from DHL, sir, we have your box you lost. Someone picked it up and called us as it still had the packing slip on it. Reunited with his bike later that evening!I got plenty of these types of stories...the latest...I'm out riding last weekend in one of the new hoods...Loseil....empty roads, great morning spin, as I'm riding along the main corniche, I spot 2 credit cards laying in the road....directly opposite a building site full of labourers.....I pick up the cards, get home, call the bank, they call the owner, he calls me, comes round in his swanky MB E63, thanks, thanks, thanks....lost everything...wallet with ID etc etc, send him a pin drop of the location...I get a call from the Loseil Command and Control...what time? exact location? etc etc...they gonna check their cameras...(All new precincts are loaded with CCTV cameras)...I analyse my Garmin data (posted in another channel about getting time stamps from Garmin files..), found the time and sent it to them..(apparently the guy is a lieutenant with C&C!), they tracked the location...it was found by a street cleaner in the area, handed to his boss and boss called in to C&C...Like that here all the time! About two hours later, he gets a call from ABSA to say someone picked it up, saw the bank card and handed it in at the bank. Everything still there, including the cash. The person finding it didn’t want to leave his details, so no way to say thanks. Some really good people still inhabit this planet. The Ouzo Posted December 1, 2020 Share my bike took me to my first fall in a good few years. As I'm riding up my road a little brown dog starts chasing me. I get to the end of the road and he won't leave me alone, so I turn back hoping he would follow me to his house and stay there, but no he keeps following, I speed up hoping he will give up if I'm to far away, I get to the main road and he carries on, but now its dangerous for him, so I turn back and get him to follow me back into the suburb.Only, because I didn't want him to cross the street during peak traffic I'm now riding on the wrong side of the road. I approach a 3 way intersection and a car stops at the stop sign, I'm slowing down now to almost a standstill whilst waving the car through the intersection.Next moment, because of my waving I start to wobble, only now I'm right next to a storm water drain and I have nowhere to go, so over onto the pavement I go. Luckily nothing more than some light abrasions on me, I didn't see anything on the bike, I'll check it nicely tomorrow when I give it a clean. I got up, people in the car were very concerned that I was ok, little doggy kept following me, but this time I decided the best thing for the dog was if I lose him through the neighbourhood where he will be much safer. After the heavy rains it must've been a bit slip 'n slidey on a gravel bike...You are correct, there are some big muddy patches in places, after that first tar uphill going down that dirt road, there was a big pool of water at the bottom, then in the 2nd yellow/red section there are a couple muddy patches and in the slow reeds there is some mud, and some on the way up to the small dam, but overall it really isn't too bad, we only finished up to the small dam and then my nephew got hit by some serious heat exhaustion so we cut the ride short and went back to the car Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
