Replace the helmet. You're only throwing good money after bad. Just because the helmet might look good after it's makeover, doesn't mean it will do it's job. Protect your pip with a new helmet. Just waiting for someone to spell it as 'helmut'

Just get your arse hardened for the saddle. That's the only thing that needs to be ready. Everything else will fall into place if you're having fun

You should be able to change to an 11 speed without any mods to anything. If you do end up going that route, I strongly suggest you fit a new chain, cassette and chainrings. Be warned, it's not going to be a very cheap project though

You need a Parktool multitool Pieter. For all the setting/changing afterwards. It's so much easier with 1 quick & easy tool
