Jeez plenty going on in this thread. Hope you all had a blast! I really enjoyed the new route even though the start was quite tough. Had a easy second one with the missus (once I caught her which took me 80km). Had to laugh at some of the comments from guys pushing up the hill in Steyn City....ranging from are they ******* mad to put this ******* hill right at the end, do they want to kill us etc etc. Lucky there was lush green lawns and some trees where they could recover before pushing on.

Short answer: I checked my results from the only time I did the Argus (2007 and 2008). There was hardly any wind in those two years. Also, Boyes Drive wasn't part of the route back then.

That means the Argus has had fairly good weather for 50% of the events in the last 8 years.

Based on the last 8 years, there's a 50/50 chance of good weather for 2015. With the route cutting out Boyes Drive, and good weather the, Elite times could drop back closer to 2:30-2:35.

Agree

For a heavier rider, the Argus is an easier / more enjoyable race - the uphills are generally long and you get good value on the downhills. The wind is not such a big factor as we're more stable and the bunches stick together all the way round to Misty Cliffs and beyond.  94.7 is continuous nagging mid-size hills that depress the crap out of me.

I found that there are many down hills on the 94.7 that are really fast that you can bomb down and save time.

I think the 94.7 is easier or quicker...for me at least

First lap.,.

To the guy riding with one leg (no prosthetic) probably doing a sub3 - you gave me a lump in my throat and some perspective. BIG big respect!

Whoooaah!

Respect respect

Being a fat  back of the bunch rider and reading through the comments here, my opinion is that I'd rather choose the Argus than the 94.7.

Rather four big uphill sections than constant medium uphills.

Also, the last 18km on the Argus is basically all the way slightly downhill, if you want you could just sit and wait for it to pass.

And the Argus has a view too.

I've done the Argus twice, one of which was that crazy 2012 Argus where it was 42 degrees Celsius on the route.

I started in the very last group of the day, and there was no water on the route until the water point under chappies.

When I went up chappies the entire road was full of walkers, so I walked too. Took me an hour to walk up there :)

I love the Argus' long slight downhills (Blue route, Llundudno to finish etc)

Agree with you - the climbs in 94.7 are long slow poison types. Especially basically from the Kyalami track dip to the top of Joe Slovo. Not much respite in that section.

If you did the Argus when it was the detour and the route came back up the blue route then that was when the Argus was like this 94.7. A slow relentless grind up a highway.

Climb Wise, I personally would think that this route is tougher than the Argus (and here is the qualifier) for the bigger less competent climbers (or fat boys - pick your names - i am one of you) as the gradients on some of those climbs are pretty nasty. I saw some big numbers on my Garmin going up Joe Slovo, Cedar Road I know is between 5 and 8%  and some of the others are pretty sharp.

Gravity kicks in on the steeper stuff for the fat boys. That stops you from powering up the climbs by standing up. Argus really only has Edinburgh (which is really early) and Suikerbossie, whereas this seemed to me to have some of the nastiest climbstacked in the end where you were less fresh (and for the noobs - plain shattered).

Past Cosmo City - followed by Cedar, then on to Steyn City and then a climb to the finish.....

The double of Cedar and then Pain City kyboshed a lot of people.

Thought I would just thank the manager of Steyn City for refusing me to ride through Steyn City to get home. So instead of a very short 2km bicycle ride through Steyn City I ended up adding almost 20km to my ride and that after having had 2 beers as well. Shame and the poor oke from Durban on his bicycle who had no idea where he was, was also refused access. Mr manager what a chop you are indeed. Karma ...

Not all races are about the view or the down hills.  Some of them are for the challenge.  Having done my 10 Argus rides and now 14 94.7 races I think the 94.7 is a harder race in terms of mental and physical endurance party because of the rolling hills and also lack of scenery.  And for that reason I like the 94.7 in that it presents a challenge to the rider and in doing so a bigger sense of accomplishment.

Or something to that effect.
