Don't do it if you suffer from vertigo...

What gearing did you use? The 42x36 on the gravel bike hurt.

46 on the back 34 on the front.

It's a deceptive hill - the end looks so close but takes so long to get to.

According to my master sheet this is the "hardest" climb in SA.....

Nice find.

No strava entries for 2018 though..........locked up?

I'm bored, sick, and injured so I thought I'd try revive an old thread

I rode this little grade earlier this year: https://www.strava.com/segments/14962904

Its not long but with a lot of it being in the +20% gradient its an energy sapper. It had me standing, in 52x28t, at a cadence of about 50. You think it will relent around the bend but nope, it just keeps going.

I need inspiration for things to attack when I can finally get back on a bike again!

What I can say is that its a crap challenge. My brother said he will not ride it again, after he was able to ride it to the top once. I stopped halfway up the first 2 times I tried it. Only having an 39(f)-25® also does not help.

I did Hans se Kop last year.  It's not an easy ride, but by no means the hardest either.  Even considered doing an Everest attempt on it.

Achievable? - yes

Hardest no? - just go faster ????????????

Couple of guys on an overseas forum came up with a formula to compare climbs in general.

I have added this formula to a couple of climbs here local.

Which Kromdraai climb are you referring to in this sheet?

Posted

The steepest hill I tackled thus far, was Kloofnek.

Sho, that was the hardest climb of my life... I honestly almost got off my bike to walk the last few meters.

Average HR was 190bpm.

Gearing though was 39/25.

Couldn't feel my legs afterwards.

Galgeberg climb near McGregor, tar road from the gate to the top at the mast

What makes it brutal is that it is literally the same gradient all the way up, just relentless, there are no easier bits to catch a breather.

Pretty decent view from the mast as well - you get a 360 view from Caledon in the south as well as Ashton, Robertson to the outskirts of Worcester in the west.

Certainly one of the toughest climbs I have ever done but Ouberg near Sutherland still the big mamma in my books.

I owned a flat in Oranjezight in Culver Street for a number of years and to get to Kloofnek Rd I would take Belleview Street.Short but a killer.

There was a bike race that used to start at Camps Bay Sports fields and go around the Peninsula clockwise. They made us turn right into Ave Fresnaye. That was also pretty steep up to Ocean View Drive.Again short but killer
