Hairy, I can't tell you what to do but I was in the position to get an 1150 just like that.

Yes you will get plenty of miles on them but they do have lots of issues.

Final drive wears out and it is hellishly expensive to repair or replace.

With the age the rear shocks, which were crap to start with, will be shot too. Again not cheap.

Read a few forums, there are plenty around with very knowledgeable people with loads of experience, should help.

My decision was to stay away, but that's just me.

That mileage is very low for an early 2000's bike known for distance riding. Less than 1,500 km per annum.........

spotted this on Gumtree ..... been working on the wife RE the bike, but do not think it will happen now (Spending cash on other "more important things" right now) .... is this a good price for the bike?

From my little knowledge I would think it is, and then if one has to ship a bike from JHB to CT is it a small fortune?

I rode one for a month or 3. Exactly the same model, colour etc. Very nice bike and I fully enjoyed it.

Hairy,

That's a discontinued model and was replaced by the 1200.

It has a strong following but you must bear in mind its age. Air-cooled, no ABS or electronics etc. Still a BMW and sold bike but just remember its age and limitations.

Having said that, I must say it looks to be in good nick and if properly maintained, should give many happy kms.

The one I had did have ABS, maybe just speak to the owner to make sure.

I've just reread my post and see it appears that the bike for sale is mine.

It's not.

I just posted it as it's in Cape Town and would be easier to view. and, of course, cheaper wrt transport costs.

But then, of course, that road trip to get to know your bike is always the one you remember..

I'm so desperate for a road trip, I offered to ride my mate's Husky 701 down to CT for him....

Sadly he arranged transport, but I think my behind may be secretly thanking it's lucky stars

Rode my duke 690 to nieeu bethseda for a rally...was ok...it just gets boring really but those thumpers have nice power for a lekker cruise. Was. To the most comfortable but made it work.

yeah, if one does it for the ride, stopping often and taking in the scenery, it certainly can be done.

I once rode a restricted RS125 right across England without knowing where I was going or being prepared for a long trip at all.  The train trip to get there was about three hours and it took about eight to get back.  And most of it was in the dark.

I think there are few bikes less suited to long distance travel as that one.
