Spanish is very descriptive...

True, but so is Afrikaans. Seems the " para" in Spanish has connotations locally.

Route could be. Start in town, up hospital bend, up Eddingbrough drive, down the cost to red hill, up red hill, ocean view, ou Kaapseweg, Constania Nek, Suikerbosie and then finish in town again.

That would be awesome!

Previously when Chappies was closed the return leg was up the Blue Route again and not via Constantia Neck - so it will probably be a much faster but much more boring route

I live and work in Hout Bay.

Fire is creeping down the mountain towards houses...

Less smoke around than yesterday though. I think the wind (what little there is now) has shifted back towards noordhoek.

We all have red eyes and sore throats from the smoke

I went for a short ride this morning, not pleasant, difficult to breathe properly.

It's 42degC today, I think a bit of greenhouse effect.

Rain forecast for tomorrow, which will be great for the Fire Services - who are doing epic work by the way.

I remember some years back when we had those really big fires, I rode Cape Point route the day after the rains came and helped to extinguish the fires.

It was like riding through some desolate lunar landscape, and we all got completely covered in wet black ash.

My 2 cents worth, but really it is up to the engineers/ experts. I ran over toward the Noordhoek side last night.

As much as we moan about Entilini they must be given much credit for the state in which they keep the road and this has had a large impact on it even being considered to be fit for use.

In the past there would have been much more damage.

Their alien plan clearing efforts above the cliffs, were in progress at the time of the fire, despite that there is a lot of bush to burn on those slopes and it is still burning right now.

As far as I am aware they have not dropped any water on it, probably with the main aim of not doing anything to disturb the cliff.

It has been subject to intense heat, both the rocks and their retaining structures, which they seem to coat in some sort of grease to keep it from seizing, this would have all been fried.

The road surface is in pristine condition other than the odd rockfall, nothing they could not sweep quickly.

So my 2 cents worth, and that’s all it is: the road is fine, but I would not like to be the engineer declaring it safe, especially as the fire is not even out yet.

I would imagine that in any event they probably have a whole list of documented checks it needs to pass before they can express an opinion.

Hope that gives some unscientific perspective.

I think a nice climb up Constania Nek would be amazing!!!

a)would make the route too long.(you keen for 130km?)

b)used to be a popular route, don't think any funride goes down hout bay side of constantia nek anymore, just too many bad crashes (including fatalaties)

If you did one of those then you would know the haul up Blue Route is anything but fun...

Swore i would never do another "De Tour"

Just think how quickly 30000 volunteers can put the fire out

The terrain where it is burning is so steep and difficult to reach on foot, that you are likely to get a hundred dead volunteers just by putting them up there, even without a fire raging. 40 degrees C in the shade today, and there is no shade up there. Smoke inhalation. Heart attacks. Fitness levels. Dehydration. You want people that know their stuff up there, that had the training and understand the risk and how to deal with it. Just look at the cliffs in the picture above, it is not as easy as just putting it out. The other side of the mountain is even worse. But, yes, I'm sure they can do with quite a few extra hands, especially when they have been at it for a few days in a row without much of a break.

a) That's why I suggested we climb red hill and not smits, you should come out at around the same distance ish, longer the better :) Doing two laps anyway.

b) This was an issue when there were no road closures and a 17 year old collided head on with a tour bus back in the day during the Cape Cobra I think, my mom was in his group. But if full road closures it should be fine
