Open your eyes and SEE that this is a once in a lifetime disaster. It is about more than just cycling, much more. It is also about more than just any individual ego, or the loss of entry fees, flights and accommodation. If you feel strongly enough about it, by all means stay away, but do not come to the ride on Sunday and moan and groan and make it unpleasant for those of us that want to enjoy it.

It is about solidarity in difficult times. I will think of the brave people who are fighting the blaze and of those who lost their homes and everything in it. I will also think of the moon landscape that is left of my favourite mtb ride where my friends and I have put in uncounted hours of sweat. That is why we will ride together. Don't spoil it!

No, there is lots they could do. This is a cop out, a very big cop out.

As Blackbeard said on another thread - there should have been a plan route C, D and E.

Not just a peninsula ride.

This is a slap in the face to the many riders from overseas and up country.

Instead of cancelling they are trying to "save face" and do a "something is better than nothing" with a positive spin on "lets do it for cape town ride"

This is bull TWANG ! What about the other fires in the overberg. No man I hate to use the words but this is bordering on cowardly and again - no planning.

Hell they could have sent us for a 50km ride down the n7 and back. or the N2 frikken heck.

Slowbee. We'll have to agree to disagree on this one, and take it over a beer together at Sani. I don't think we appreciate how close this was to being cancelled!!! Probably should have been.

Town, Sea Point, Kloof Nek, DeWaal Drive, M3 to end, back to Constantia and over Rhodes Drive.

Could have at least made it scenic...

What a waste.

isn't there still a fire in Constantia?

Think there should be two routes...... The 47km one and then the original route for all the moaners, you just need to sign an indemnity and state that you will not require any assistance on route, medical or evacuation.

There we go all happy!

And if any fire engine needs to get to a flare-up it has the right to run you down if the situation demands......

Will they refund half our entry fee? No, it's all about making money for them. There are enough routes to do a 110km race. Stellenbosch would have been great. I spend over R10000 fir a 47km fun ride. WTF? ????? Not happy

In the following post you refers to all moaners and bitchers and is my own opinion.

shame yes and as all you moaners are seasoned race organisers why did you not offer to quickly organise traffic stopages medical support water stations etc for a mere few thousand cyclists, of whom another bunch would have surely moaned about something else, in record time.

Go drink some wine or visit some of the awesome spots while you down there.

If you dont drink wine I can understand the whining.

Put your big boy shoes on and pay attention to rule #5

It's understandable that some people are cancelling there trip to Cape Town but surely the whole weekend is not just about the tour alone. Accomodation and flights are booked, come down anyway, enjoy the weekend, shake hands with a fireman and some other volunteers.

Well, I am out. I have to drive 9ookm to do 47km. That is less than 1 and a half hour on the bike. I have nothing against the decision, but I have to count my losses. It is just not worth it for me.

Well I have to drive 2200km to ride the 47km. I will find a way to donate to help aswell, Just gotta find a firemans helmet for sunday now.

Where is it ok to ride in Cape Town and surrounds?! I've paid for plane tickets - car hire - hotel accommodation - bike transportation. I'm gonna make it worthwhile come flames, ash, damaged roads, smoke inhalation .... Bla bla bla

Gordons Bay road leading to Pringle Bay is very scenic but the road can be sketchy for cyclists though. Take a ride to Hermanus.

Why can't we ride up to Tableview on marine drive and come back down in the other side as this road can be closed as koeberg Road runs parallel to it and this can add 40km into the route

I think its going to be absolute chaos with guys trying to race it. An absolute crashfest!

I really still want to ride, but for the sake of riding. Twice, if they will allow it in the day.

It would be nice if they neutralised it completely and turned it into a huge Twitter ride/Critical Mass

Perhaps I should drop down 10 groups and find some like minded people.

I don't even own a road bike and have never wanted to do this ride (fear of mass participation and all that tar and all those lines I would have to try keep..) but hell I reckon this year it is going to be something very special. So those doing it enjoy it.. chat to the rider next to you. Wave at the supporters and if you see a fire engine, stop and shake the fire fighters hand and say thank you.

Like I just said, I just expected so much more, but not this. And the wife just hit me with the frying pan and has taken me on with my comments as well!

Tell you what and I have re read the statement from the trust again, if the cycle trust truly thinks this should be a solidarity ride, they should make a significant donation of entry money to the fire fighters or the wildfire services.

And I really want you guys to take me on with this - but I cannot get out my head two things from the statement.

1. There never was an alternative route planned, other than always going down the peninsula (the notable absence highlights this)

2. It has now gone to far into "chasing money"

That said - I will be on the start line, in my seeding group. And just amble along as always. And just as chirpy. Maybe Thor you sprint the first lap and join me for a champers breakfast before I do my first lap ?

*Edit: I will have my own bottle of champers in the bag and a glass cause if I find a firefighter I will have a drink with them*

Hey thanks Mrs Slowbee, I think that slap with the frying pan did His Slowness a lot of good, he is sounding much more rational in this post. Just one more little bang on the head and he will be his old sensible self again.
