With spring in the air for most of the people on here, how is everyone doing? What events do you have lined up, thinking about for the year ahead?

training for sanlam cpt marathon has been going too well it seems and now I have pinched a nerve in the hip that just won't let up. Missed a total of 102km now with just 602km done June till date. I think I can manage another 180km before D day and hopefully be fine. At least I finaly have my nutrition issues sorted. But I miss my mtb so so much and with the bliss of cold weather gone keeping this running regime going in our lovely summer heat will be my biggest test yet

Enjoyed a series or Park runs (walks) dring winter. Progressed from 5 to 15km.

Doing another on 24 September, part of their series on public holidays.

Though the emphasis now is to get bike fit for Winelands on 12 October.

Then to find a balance between these two mistresses ....

Working on getting my walking pace down to 8:30/minute, currently at 8:45 for a 5km.  The 15km was done at 9:49/km (given the rain and slippery terrain this was actually not too bad) .... too slow to finish a half marathon before cut off time ....

Plan going forward .... keep doing the TrailFun park run series.  And keep working at my pace sessions around the dam .....

Chris, how are your knees holding up to walking? I hope it’s painless?

Blouklip trail run (21) for 9nov, and George MUT (45) end May again.
I pulled a calf muscle and have been riding instead of running for two weeks. I have to be honest, mountainbiking is still my first outdoor love.

.

Musical chairs .... :P

My biokineticist introduced the park walking to my overall program to get the balance sorted between the different muscle groups .... makes sense, but also means the one group of muscles after the other are activated.  Truly musical chairs as the pain points dance around .....

BUT, looking past the short term pain, it is amazing to experience the benefits as the various supporting muscles start doing their work.

That horrible pain "inside" the knee is kept at bay.  I get to be active .... what more can one ask for ?

The only pain while walking alternates between shins, calves, quads, hammies and glutes .... interesting to see how these points move about during the event, and how it changes as my gym works kicks in .... progress is slow and steady !!

And being able to walk faster than the slow runners ..... hiehie ....

Hope you get your program back on track.

My friend is also training for this event, and had a brief scare with back issues ....

Got told by my wife 4 weeks her company has a Berlin Marathon entry they'll lose as someone pulled out...

... so here's me lining up for my first marathon after having last run a running race pre covid

... Follow me for more how to dumb advice

After finishing my first ultra in June, the bug has bitten so I've signed up for the Trans Gran Canaria ultra (84k, ~4200m of elevation gain) in February as a way of escaping the European winter for a week. It's a pretty big step up from my first one, but I'm all about questionable decisions.

Depending on how that goes, I'm also going to try to enter one of the Zugspitz ultras (trying to decide between running the 44km with a mate, or going longer on either the 60 or 80km races) or the Laugavegur ultra in Iceland. Won't be able to do both because I'll get divorced if I try to.

wait what how does that work?

Company buys an entry, fights accom etc and the runner gets injured so they find someone else to fill the slot?

and this is next weekend?

I still run but not nearly as much as I should/used to. It's more of mild cardio session than anything else. I have returned to playing volleyball after more than a 20 year break. Needless to say, it is painful but I can play full games without having to worry about ITB issues. I'm playing in a national masters tournament next weekend in Durban.

Everyone seems to have a few good goals coming up or just enjoying the running 🙂👌

Amsterdam marathon for me in a few weeks, then nothing set in plan yet. Was successful getting a Tokyo marathon spot for March so that’ll be fun. And hopefully finishing all the world majors there.

Volleyball went well. My team managed to get bronze. I started playing again in May of this year, and we went to this tournament with minimal training games together. We should have done better by at least reaching the final but bronze isn't too shabby.

Where is the race report?🙃

Haha I'm not very good at race reports.

...it was an experience though yjor!! The race starts a bit late compared to what we use to at home, having no seeding and my wife putting my predicted time down as 4:30 meant i was in the 3rd wave (group G) 1st group. We started at 10:15.

The weather was near perfect clear skies but cool and off we went. The race saw 58000 entrants and the email we got yesterday said a record breaking 53000 finishers and to me this was the highlight. The fact that from the gun till the end you are never alone and that the road is always full of runners... there's no dead spots where you in no mans lands. The crowds are out in their thousands (still not a gees level like SA/CPT) but they came out.

Bands , drums, bagpipes all kinds of along the road. So cool! There was quite a few South Africa's out there on the route too, and that helped keep me smiling on the outside. On the inside i was crying

Now i don't run (as my brother puts it I'm almost anti running) so was relying on my cycling fitness and some of the training i did i was hoping to do 4:30. From the gun i made sure i kept my head and maintained my pace (6:20min/km). I managed to come home official time 4:29:38 last 800m i ran 5:33min/km to make in time.

My nutrition was always going to be a concern packed in only 2 fast bars as i forgot the rest at home, luckily one of my wifes guests offered me 2 pvm bars which i kept on me, I last tried gels about 10 years ago and couldn't stomach it around 15kms to go i grab 2 muarten gels at the table and with some water got one in at 10km to go and 5km to go... Can't say it helped or didn't i survived.

...glad that's done and my 1st marathon done. I'm still too sore whether or not I'll do another. Still walking like a penguin.

... lessons learnt is part of the reason i came was to help with logistics etc with my wife's company, i walked around 10kms Thursday 15kms Friday and 22km Saturday. I should of probably spent less time on my legs and feet. They were very heavy during the race...
