Pulse Posted March 15, 2019 Posted March 15, 2019 I judge the circumstances eg on very hot ultra's I will take salt during the race, primarily to not 'over hydrate' (iow actually decreased sodium levels) https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5334560/ Some more: http://www.marathonguide.com/training/coachmindy/hyponatremia.cfm I agree with this, especially for the those that tends to naturally drink a lot. I am typically on the other side, and am always somewhat dehydrated at the end of an event/training session. If one manages what one drinks, like typical sports drink/Coke; those are typically isotonic or near isotonic and would generally not lead to hyponatremia. If one has a propensity for water instead, I would look at some sort of electrolyte during long events Pieter-za 1
Stretch Posted March 15, 2019 Posted March 15, 2019 I've taken electrolyte tablets during all of my comrades... Maybe a crutch..I don't know.. I've never cramped during the race though. My last marathon I only took gu's.. Also no cramping... But then I don't sweat a lot
Pulse Posted March 15, 2019 Posted March 15, 2019 Good luck to all the Om Die Dam guys tomorrow! Pieter-za and Andrew Steer 2
Mudsimus Posted March 17, 2019 Posted March 17, 2019 Who used a Garmin 735 for Comrades before? I use about 40% of battery life on a 3h run. Thats with HR but not Bluetooth and no glonas. At that rate it wont make 8hours. How much of a difference will the HR make if its turned off? Any other settings to look into?Stupid me discovered why I was using so much battery life. After the first km the back light turns on an stays on. Didn't notice that in the daylight. ???? Disabled the feature and today I only used 18% during a 3h run. amr63, Stretch, Frosty and 2 others 5
Odinson Posted March 17, 2019 Posted March 17, 2019 Anyone have suggestions for a nice route in Blouberg? Somewhere safe where I can do about 25km without having to do a bazillion loops of a suburban cup de sac or something.
Jewbacca Posted March 17, 2019 Posted March 17, 2019 Is this why you're calling people derogatory terms? Salty from not getting as much exercise lately? First sucker of the day to fall for Godwin's Law.You know the saying floating around the hub about being lekker? Yea... I hope you've recovered well, have many safe kilometers of running and riding and good luck with next week's race!hahahahaha if you can't laugh at that dude, I don't know then You literally kicked up a stink on 4 threads about people making multiple posts, not clicking the 'multi quote' button etc and then when referenced in a very fun manner you take it personally?! (shakes head) I have thank you. Had a great ride in Jonkers yesterday a fantastic surf this morning and 20 odd very fun mountain run km afterwards. I hope you managed to get rid of that sand
Jewbacca Posted March 17, 2019 Posted March 17, 2019 On another note, you guys who are tech gadget savvy. A watch that can offer Pre set GPS navigation that will last up to 22 hours? (2 nights). 1 night is almost probably enough but I don't want to get caught with my pants down if things don't go according to plan and I have to limp through more darkness. I have read/watched a few reviews, and by all accounts the Suunto Ambit3 offers this. Any real time experience?

Have a look at the Suunto 9, its battery is a beast. Jewbacca 1

Also, you should make an optometrist appointment, you're literally seeing double.Oh wait it just hit me, you also don't know how a multiquote button works - no wonder you were triggered into oblivion. I'm still happy you also had a good weekend of running or riding. Take this as a lesson to practicing impartiality Edited March 18, 2019 by Dirkitech
Barry Stuart Posted March 18, 2019 Posted March 18, 2019 Report back from those of you that did ODD? How did the race go? Was the organisation any better this year? Details, people...
Pieter-za Posted March 18, 2019 Posted March 18, 2019 (edited) Report back from those of you that did ODD? How did the race go? Was the organisation any better this year? Details, people...I left Centurion 3:25-ish and parked at ~4:20 at the venue, 50m from the club tent and 100m from the finish. 1000x better than last year. The marshals on the R512 Pelindaba road was a good idea. Org was great, nothing to complain about. (In fact I think they did a great job with what they had.) Enjoyed a nice day out on the road Edited March 18, 2019 by Pieter-za Dirkitech, Hacc, tjommies3 and 2 others 5
tjommies3 Posted March 18, 2019 Posted March 18, 2019 Hi Everyone This may be far-fetched but I would like to ask the following. I have been injured with my ITB issues, started building again recently after some physio sessions, and completed just over 134km for the year so far with no qualifiers entered or completed and no Comrades entry. Should I try my luck with the time left and go for it? I also have the month of Ramadhan in-between. TIA So since this post 2 weeks ago, I am up to 248km for the year now. I know that the increase in mileage is a lot but I'm still feeling good. I have entered the Jackie Gibson marathon on 31st March, and I feel that I should be ok to qualify. Still not sure about actually doing Comrades but I should have a good idea in 2 weeks. I'm just hoping that I won't be tired on race day. Chris_ 1
Andrew Steer Posted March 18, 2019 Posted March 18, 2019 Report back from those of you that did ODD? How did the race go? Was the organisation any better this year? Details, people...We stayed right by the start, made logistics a pleasure. It still looked like the traffic was a bit of a balls up - there were Ultra runners still going over the start mat half an hour after the gun. It's just not realistic to get that many people down a single road. I also seriously do not understand why registration was not at the start finish like last year - not to mention no address was given - just Harties Running Club which doesn't even register on Google Maps. So apart from having to drive off to the other side of town, you also needed a little luck to find it. They also committed the cardinal sin of running out of water... it was super hot, but it generally always is, so it's not really an excuse. Some of the guys from our club didn't have water or 3-5 water points straight. That's asking for serious poo... especially when the temp on the road is in the high 30's I just ran the 21km... my physio warned me doing the Ultra would be suicide. So for once I listened and sadly had to kiss my OMTOM good bye. It was a good thing I downgraded though as I only just kept it together for the 21km, last 6 odd kms's was pretty rough as my whole right hip area was pretty determined to seize up, but I just made sure not to stop and give it a chance too. I would never have made the Ultra. Ran 2:02, it was a pretty tough route, it's just never flat around there. Was pretty cool to watch the winning Ultra guys come in... 5 Nedbank runners dominated the race, all coming home in under 3hrs for the 50km. Hoping to run the Run Zone Northern Chase 32km this Sunday, should be a good step up and hopefully put me in position to qualify for Comrades at Jackie Gibson. Lot's of work to do personally. shaper Posted March 18, 2019 Posted March 18, 2019 (edited) Report back from those of you that did ODD? How did the race go? Was the organisation any better this year? Details, people...Will echo what Pieter said, left JHB at 3:15am and was parked by 4:20am, very close to the finish. Marshals and traffic were good and parking easy. Enjoyed the run until everything started tightening up with 5kms to go... otherwise enjoyed my first ODD. Finished in 5:19hrs Edited March 18, 2019 by shaper Barry Stuart, Pieter-za, Dirkitech and 2 others 5
