It will be a sad day if they bring in a 21km on the same day as the Comrades. And I guess it will probably happen in future. Its all about the money and profit.

Which is at the forefront of any business.

In todays market it makes sense to accommodate the wannabe runners. It makes the event more sustainable.

It would suck if 7 years from now Comrades was in financial ruin because they 'stuck to their guns' and didn't create an inclusion point/cash injection using a very willing and existing market.

Well, we as a nation are a bunch of long distance masochists. If I look at how quickly entries sell out neither Oceans or Comrades have the need to do this. If they want to make more money, simply allow more Ultra/Comrades runners.

If they can sort out the logistics around busses and transferring the second leg runners to midway, surely another 2000 ultra runners could not have been a problem.

I say that again with a friend in mind who ran a silver Oceans last year and now sit without an entry... so I might be somewhat one-eyed.

I was actually tempted to do this... but not sure what will be left of my legs after the Trail run on the Friday

Second leg probably wouldn't be all that bad at such a short distance?

It's tough but doable when you've done the first leg... big difference hitting Chappies at 40kms and at 12kms

Interesting to see how they manage the logistics

i thought about that, and there's nothing on the FAQ. but it seems quite easy.

runner A and B drive to start together.

Runner A runs, runner B drives car to noordhoek over OKW

they swap. Runner A drives back to start/finish.

Guys...i LOVE the idea of a relay, come on, dont be so arrogant  .  We all know the real Ultra and Iron men are the hero's but this mere mortal would like a chance to experience the beauty of being able to run the Chapmans and Constantia part of it...I would also love to train to run an ultra but just don't have the time and quite honestly, i don't think my knees would cope.

For me, this is an opportunity to experience what everyone that runs the ultra talks about, the beauty of being able to run Chapmans and Constantia....its not for me to have the bragging rights of saying I ran the Ultra, I make sure that people know I only do the 21km...and quite honestly, I would rather only run the halves and enjoy the after run party and week holiday in Cape Town, than not be able to walk for a week!

I would also be the first to run a 21km/30km Comrades...

PS..if anyone wants a relay partner next year...pick me please...but I would like to do the 2nd half and we can swop the following year.

I know guys who have 2 babies and run successful companies who MAKE the time.

I get what you are saying, but that in essence is why the Ultra guys are so 'proud' of their day. They make sacrifices to get there, spend the hours on the road and the time strengthening their bodies.

Rather say 'I'm not an ultra runner, will never be an ultra runner, but I would love to run the good part of the route'... It's at least honest.

Very few Ultra finishers get to glide over the route without having worked really hard to get there at some point.

21km/30km Comrades...

Thats just wrong. Doing Comrades is a lifetime dream for some runners. Adding a 21 and connecting it to the name will just water it down.

If they really have to they can do a 21 the day before, but call it something different.

Just adjust your perspective and enter the full distance event. A marathon is far until you have done comrades, Comrades is far until you have run a 100 miler, 100miles is far until you run a munga. Reality is just knuckle down and do it.

On the Munga note, I see there are questions about the leaders route already. . . . . . . . .

Comrades will never have and should never have a shorter distance... so you don't have to worry about that.....But 2 oceans has already introduced the half marathon so I still see no problem with including the relay. People will never say that they've done the ultra.. They will get a different medal a different shirt. They will have a different number on the day. Like I've said there is absolutely no difference between that and the half other than running the same route and maybe getting some cheers from the crowds thinking they are ultra competitors.

Go have a look at the route history, where they cross the R37, left the route and rejoined later at the road crossing. Rules clearly state you can only rejoin where you left the route. Which is now over a 3 hour back track, even more if you consider it has been downhill for those 3 hours.
