Hectic, I don't think I have the stomach to do that

He was a member of the British SAS and his speciality was demolition with high explosives in all manner of rough neigbourhoods where there was a hot war going on. Sawing off a couple of frozen fingers with no shots fired overhead would have been a doddle for Sir Ran.

Saw my first snake of the year today. Just its tail as in disappeared into the grass at the side of the trail.

I'd guess from the size of the bit I saw, it was maybe a metre long, dark golden brown-colour and a little thicker than one of my fingers . . . .

15 secs earlier and I'd have seen it properly. 15 secs later and I would never have known. Timing, as they say, is everything.

Have you managed to find out what it could've been?

Cool. I always enjoy snake sightings. Just not too close though, but I always stop and look when I see one. They generally get treated like sharks. People see one and freak out. 9.995 times out of 10 the snake or shark is not going to do anything to try and kill you.

Just don't pick one up if you are not a snake handling professional.

[edit] You have a better chance of getting bitten by a dog. (I know, as I have first hand experience - snakes, sharks and dogs - the frikken dogs are up 2 - nil, the rest I'm up plenty - nil)

Haha oh!? I thought it was weird to find a snake in this cold weather.

Few years back I sighted a massive Cape Cobra around this time of year crossing the road just before Contermanskloof entrance (which is in open farmland in the northern parts of Cape Town). I stopped and marveled at this magnificent animal, and then a boks in a Audi came along and drove over it, fatally injuring the poor snake. This was the biggest cobra I've seen so far, nearly 2m and it was sad to see it suffer.

Yeah they come out in winter to warm in the sun.

I am one of those people who is petrified of snakes..but I've made a point of being able to identify snakes...(so that I can know how scared I have to be[emoji1787]).. I blame the one Indiana Jones movie for my fear of snakes[emoji1787]
