I would like some advice please.

I will be riding with a few of my mates in a charity group (some of them are doing the 94.7 for the first time). Our goal is to just finish the race, and enjoy the day out on the bike (so no racing involved etc). Are there any tips anyone can think of that will be useful for someone doing it for the first time other than what I could think of below?

  • Do not push to hard in the beginning (keep some matches for Ceder and Steyn City).
  • Do not ride in the yellow line (ride where the car's drive, as the road is cleaner there, and therefore less punctures).
  • Do not bunch at the start of the water table to get something to drink (the water tables are very long), ride past the water tables and get your drink close to the end of the water tables.
  • Watch out for riders backing away from a water table with their bike between their legs.
  • When passing the Bar One ladies, try to keep full control of your bike.
  • Stay away from the Tequila table at Zoo Lake.
Any advice or tips will be much appreciated.

I would add that of you are going to have to stop at water tables stop at the early ones which are normally clear as not many ppl stop at them and in doing that prevent yourself from stopping at the chaotic later ones.

Hi there

A question... If you buy someone's entry do you get their start time as well?

Nope, you will be seeded.

As Veeez says, you will need to be reseeded at registration. See below taken from website:

"The initial entrant needs to send their Number Collection document and a letter of permission to the new participant. The new rider needs to come to Number Collection, collect the number, and then go to Queries to request a substitution. The new rider will be reseeded according to their own seeding index. Substitution fee = R150.00."

Especially avoid stopping at the halfway mess!

I don't want to cause mass hysteria, a'la Chicken Little, but I think we should start discussing the practicality of doing this route in the wet.

What tips can the experienced riders give to us noobs on doing a race like this in the wet on those thin-and-highly-pressurized-tyres...?

I am chicken, if it's wet I take out my mtb.

Drop your tyre pressure and stay off the painted lines

Watch out for the painted surface!  Maybe decrease tyre pressure slightly.

some apps I checked shows the rain coming in after 11, so plan to be done by then.

But if its wet, run lower tyre pressures.

Brake earlier as there will be a delay on wet brakes, but don't be to hard as it might kick you off when it does eventually stop.

If it's wet, a la 2006 then:

  • Avoid the puddles - you never know what lurks beneath the surface (pot hole);
  • Avoid the painted lines when cornering;
  • Hold you line (no matter what the weather);

Relax - the weather okes can't get yesterday's weather right, so I would worry too much about Sunday (it's too far out).

Try Windguru - it appears to be a little more reliable (read: not accurate, but good enough to make informed decisions).

It also shows a dry race, prevailing winds and a good day out.

BTW - Last week, a mate said that the wind was so hard you could see white horses on the puddles

Yes - and I didn't follow any of the advice I gave in the post you replied to.

Blitzed the course in record time (a new PB at the time).

I think that depends on whether you want an official result or not. If you simply just wear their number and ride as if you are them, then you should have their start time. Though technically this is probably not allowed, I dont see how they would stop you.
