Don't like to start riding in the rain.... but if I am out already - a free shower is no issue. It's only water...

My bike has not dissolved yet, no chains I've used were stuffed after some rain drops so I'm all good. Wear and tear is part and parcel of the game. Yes it may wear 0.005% quicker - so be it.

Then again I like washing my bike when needed so don't mind spending some time tinkering and cleaning all the gears etc

If I plan to ride on the day and there is possibility of rain I just take an Apple jacket with or gilet. Anticipate your stops and braking time, watch your leaning in corners and watch out for major puddles for obstacles. Feather your braking to disperse water off rims. If it rains in a race it slows everyone down and I gain some advantage.

I had my time riding in rain and mud at mtb events, which became quite costly afterwards. I haven't ridden a road bike in the rain yet, I might try it out.

This, then you are A for away.

Commute in the rain, or any weather. Use a rain shell jacket with layers underneath.

Just embrace the wet roads and ride.....I have found I get more dirt/wet from the spray from the wheels. A minimalist rear guard such as "ass savers" do a really decent job.

On the mountain bike I think twice before hitting wet trails ... bad for the bike and trails.

No, I'm a p*ssy.

Avoid it at all costs but 2 weeks ago I got caught in one major storm.

Going downhill (road) with the rain hitting my eyes and no brakes was no fun.

Have also ridden in hail, that's also no fun. Those hail stones hurt like a mother f*cker.

I’ve replaced enough components on my MTB to say “No” in wet conditions.

Road, though, is a different story:

I won’t ride on my ace, so if a club ride is cancelled because the fair weather riders won’t ride, then it’s a no for me.

If caught mid-ride, I’ll seek shelter and try wait it out. Otherwise I’ll ride in the wet, but won’t take chances on corners or descents.

That said, the last ride I did in the wet wasn’t very enjoyable, but it was a Tour from m Jhb to PMB, and we had to get to the overnight stop. The lack of appropriate gear from my side was the reason (very cold, wet and windy).

Raced in rain for Stellenbosch Tour, will probably race in rain for 99er. Having no brakes in the bunch is no fun, and doing the full bike clean (can't just wipe to clean) is no fun, but I always feel like a badass after such a ride!

Agree with the first half, riding in the rain on the road bike is no biggie for me as you can compensate for your dodgy brakes. Racing in the rain in a big group half-blinded by the spray of the group and without brakes - terrifying (and to make it worse at the Stellenbosch tour we had tandems mixing it up in the group completely messing up the group dynamics)

I'm a commuter. Both my commuting bikes have mudguards.

On days where I wake up to a downpour, I don't ride (except when it's mid December and there's someone to catch on the bike hub commuter challenge leaderboard)

I always have the wind jacket with me, and my phone's always in a zip lock. I put my lights on when it rains, and often have to use the sunglasses (even if it's dark) just to keep the rain out of my eyes on the faster parts.

Except when it hails - then I try to find shelter.

one of my most memorable commutes was before they built the cycle lanes.

It had been raining like no-ones business, the roads were flooding, and when I got to Milnerton the lagoon had flooded over onto the road ....traffic was being diverted, so I thought I would try to get through ... ended up being too deep and took an alternative route.

Got to Paarden Island, and it started hailing .... properly.

Took a detour through the harbour, this was flooded, but not too deep to cycle through. I must have gone through the biggest patch of thorns known to mankind, and ended up carrying the bike out and through the harbour with both wheels flatted out.

One of the best and most memorable rides out on the bike.
