I am contemplating doing a race and then a social loop afterwards. For the vibes.

Did that last year and was dissappointed with the vibes found on second loop. Been told about beer and tequilla stops and found only one.

Hope you have better luck

I'm bored with this race...............sitting this one out and going for a lekker MTB ride instead (been roadie for last 18 years....)

The reverse route is to save money on staff manning road closures at all the intersections in the suburbs or reduce the motoristsmoaning about road closures and has NOTHING to do with where the hills are in the race.....

Your boredom aside, I'm not with you on the reversal being a cost saving / reduce moaning issue. The new route means the M1 is closed till later in the day and would think that is the busiest piece of tar on the route, ie biggest nuisance to motorists

Fewer offramps to close than the many many intersections in the suburbs. I used to work in the the organisation of the race as a supplier from a traffic perspective....

But it's the same route so surely all the same intersections have to be closed or am I missing something?

They should be able to open all the routes/intersections around Randburg etc earlier in the day than having them closed all day being the normal route

Intersections at the beginning of the route have to stay open for a much shorter time than the intersections at the end of the route.

So it makes sense for the organiser to adjust the route so that they have less intersections to close at the end of the route.

The start is going to be a whole lot of pain.

Did a route plan on Strava, from Broadacres to Nelson Mandela Bridge(The stupid calculator doesnt want me to go through Steyn city)

41kms, 803m of climbing. Add in the 50m of climing to get into Steyn City and the 60m to get out and you have close to 1000m of climbing in the first 50km.

At least the 2nd half is gonna be fun for us 90kg+ fatties at around 300m of climbing in 45km...

I am doing my 9th in a row this year.............my aim is to do 10 then call it quits

I did my 10th consecutive 94.7 last year... and I also said the same.

I have entered this year again... Don't want to miss out on the hype about the reversed route.

After this year I am definitely done  :whistling:

Nearly had heart failure @ R504 entry... skipping the MTB race... last year I already felt it was not worth it...

While definitely expensive, would much rather pay R504 for an event with full road closure around Johannesburg on roads that one cannot ride.

Compare this price to the ASG Satellite classic @R400 (with no road closure and little value add) and it's not so bad...

Your calculations looks correct, I mapped the route (exactly like last year just in reverse) on ridewithGPS(including going through Steyn City) and after 48km (getting onto the M1) total elevation was on 903m.  Total distance for the route was 96.4 and elevation was 1388m.

Here is the link: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/28704823

And here is the elevation for the route:

Edit 1: Frost beat me to it. :whistling:

Edit 2: Correction on route and climbs list.

I've had a go at mapping it out on RWG:

ridewithgps.com/routes/28704830

Some notes on the above:

  • My exact locations for the start & finish are pure speculation.
  • I've got he wrong side of the M1. Based on this image I'm assuming we are going to use the same side as last year, i.e. going the wrong way on the eastern side. This is a pain to map out, so I have just shown it on the wrong side.

This is good enough for analysis of the climbs.

So the list of climbs (short climbs have been excluded):

Its going to splinter the groups early on... if the climbing guys put the pressure on it race over before 1/2 way. The normal way around used to have fairly large groups going up cedar... now I suspect it will be in tatters going up Homestead past Bryanston CC... and then there will still be the two small matters of Jan Smuts and Kyalami to deal with!! Big boys wont stand a chance...
