I have owned seven Cannondales all bought through various Local bike shops distributed by Cape Cycle Systems and Omnico.

I have no issues what so ever with Omnico and have only ever received good service from them and the Cannondale Brand Manager.

Unfortuantly due to current financial constraints and the fact my daughter needs a new bike if I can pick up one of these Makro specials I will go for it.

From a mechanical point I have no problem with re - assembling the bike and have enough spare components that eventually I can build up a nice hard tail for my daughter who has outgrown her Cannondale 26er.

+1, Only had exceptional service from Omnico and Cannondale in the past. But that is a great price, and with all the money I have spend over the years at Omnico, I won't loose any sleep buying this Makro special

LOL, anyone that goes out of their way to prevent SA consumers from buying their distributed brands through any channel but theirs (at their prices) certainly doesn't get my support.

The statement released by Omnico over this Makro deal just about sums it up perfectly.

I don't see any sales prevention by Omnico - they said the products were brought it without their approval and as such they won't be supporting them.

Given that Omnico isn't getting any money from the sale I think that is pretty fair.

According to one small bike shop I used to deal with and from which I bought a few Cannodales from, since Omnico took over  brand  they would only supply to the bigger shops that would commit to volume.

Heard the same thing. My LBS has been trying to get them in for a while with plenty customers wanting them but Omnico apparently won't give in due to there being a big dealer in the ''area''.

That sounds like good business practice to me - they are protecting the shops that support them rather than chasing every single possible sale they could make.

All good and well apart from the fact that there is only one 'dealer' in KZN and it's CL.

My LBS sells plenty of bikes but apparently no matter what they have tried they can't get it right. Bit unfair if you ask me, don't think CL needs much protection.

It's a delicate balance - Distributors support the shops that support them (in terms of shop floor space, advertising, brand awareness etc).

A shop that "sells" bikes by Internet pictures or word of mouth should not get the same deal as shops that invest in brands. How to make the system fair is of course a complex issue.

One shop per area sounds a little monopolistic to me though!

Agree with you fully.

And they are fully invested in every brand they sell. One has to be given an opportunity to succeed though.

Is your LBS a small, cluttered type shop? If that's the case, then it could answer your question.

If you care about your brand, you also care how the product is presented to potential buyers, and a nice showroom will elevate your brand.

It's tough competing with CL - they have deep pockets.

Most CL shops have at least 150 bikes on the floor - way more than most dealers.

I think it is purely volume based.

In claremont/ kenilworth there are bike shops next to, few doors away or a couple of blocks down the road.

They are big shops, some have more than one branch and most of them sell omnico's products

Someone is telling porkies pies - Omnico list 18 dealers within 25km of Durban. Plenty more within Kzn.

A few of those shops have since closed down and none of them stock Cannondale. My LBS stocks Omnico products, just can't get 'Dales (apparently).

I'd phone around if I were you.

I've witnessed tons of soap operas where what the shop says and what the distributor says are two different things.

Especially around warranties!

Year models will also be interesting.

Dos it matter? on Ali frames nothing much changes in one or two years bar the paint job. And to be honest SLX is SLX no matter what the year bar a few grams. So for less than half the price who cares. Regarding guarantees, do you really need one with the hoops you have to jump through anyway.

At that price it does not matter
