Ignorance is not an excuse. A Dr or shift worker should know better. How is it any different to driving while drunk?

Driver survives and another cyclist is dead.

How do you expect someone who has worked the 12 hour night shift to get home after a hectic shift?

Sometimes the right thing to do is to do the right thing but it is just too much hassle.

Some family is dealing with not having a husband - son - father be at home tonight and never again.

It was just too much hassle.

RIP and strength to the family.

.......all I thought was how terrible the repercussions are for the family(s) going forward.

Same thing happened to me in the Cradle. You know that you are privy to something that someone else doesn't yet know and that when they find out, they will be devastated.

So my buddy in our group is a PPA Marshall and received this.

Driver on MV fell asleep behind the wheel, veered across the road and went head on into a group of 5 cyclists this morning at 5:30am. 3 hospitalised, 1 fatality confirmed.

Jesus that is... I don't know what. At a total loss as to the devastation that moment has caused and after so many incidents, am just lost how to react to another senseless massacre. If this was the UK the offical line would be wall to wall 'terrorist incident' until other factors evolved and  it would get national coverage. Here, just another day, another horror and another family destroyed.

Just want to scream and kick and punch and cry. I've lost enough people who I know / vaguely know / ridden with on the road now. I've attended their funerals, tried to comforted their kids and hugged their broken wives. I've only been here 8 years, it's just riding a bike. It's insane.

Your post is the only one I didn't get. Are you saying its okay to murder people because something inconvenienced you? That would be insane.

Heard a few stories of Uber driver's falling asleep behind wheel. One radio presenter said he was actually asked by one if he could'nt drive instead.

So sorry to hear about another fatal incident on our roads.

I absolutely agree that the driver should be charged. To fall asleep on a short low speed section of road between traffic lights shows that this person should not have been behind the wheel. Drunk driving is another factor to be considered.

It is sad news and there are no winners in this scenario. On both sides there are major impacts, both the cyclist`s loved ones, friends and family as well as on the driver's side.

I understand there is a need to dump all our frustrations about the dangers on the road on an individual but we do not have all the facts. Lets rather wait for the court case to understand the factors at play. Till that time naming and shaming the driver will not add a lot to the conversations except for things to go in circles.

All the best to all involved and hope that the death and injuries to fellow riders are not in vain and that there will be some benefit to the wider society even though that will probably be very little value for his loved ones.

This is why me and my family do not do any more early morning rides on roads around here.

Condolences to family and all the rider's riding buddies. The driver should absolutely be charged.

R.i.p fellow cyclist.

It may well be that the driver could have had a medical issue that caused him to pass out.

Or a genuine case of a driver just falling asleep due to many hours of driving.

But can see why people jump to conclusions re alcohol being involved, when people have prangs at 5.a.m (ish) often booze and all night party is part of the reason.

Safer to start Sat morning rides at 7:30?
