Rider Down on Suikerbossie

A terrible accident thoughts to family, the driver and the rider. That descent is a rush but you have to pull back for the lights. Every time they change on you and the number of times I've seen people run those has made me very cautious. We face so much out on our roads day to day that we have to look after each other where we can.

One of the positives was that the fuller story was shared so quickly before there was time for assumptions to be made. Now the focus is can be more where is should be, the recovery of both parties and what others can learn from the experience.

Note to self:

There are a couple of places around the Cape peninsula where it is easy to ride well over the speed limit. Going down Suikerbossie towards Hout Bay is one. Chappies towards Noordhoek is another. Kloofnek and The Glen too. Most of those descents can be done much faster on a bike than in a car. I will keep in mind that keeping to the speed  limit is for my own safety also.

Down ou Kaapse weg and along main road fish hoek to Muizenberg are other areas that can get hairy and have you slotting into the traffic at similar/faster speeds.

I agree. We lose sight of 'safety' when we get to feel the rush of wind in our ears.

Terrible accident. Sjoe.

The driver should probably get some help too. Causing grievous bodily harm to someone can leave some deep scars that can fester if not dealt with properly.

It's not an accident if you go through a red light.

Hope he can pull through, having a family member at gsh icu earlier this year there really is excellent care in these circumstances

I'm soooooo careful on those descents. You pick up a little piece of glass in Camps and by the time you are descending Suikerbossie in full Froome Tuck mode it goes through your tube. It will be weeks before you are allowed back in the bed with white linen.

Wow so sorry to hear about this accident. I must have missed it by minutes as I probably descended around 7h20 or thereabouts. Still not exactly sure where this happened as I don't seem to be able to recall a road joining Suikerbossie on the left in the place described.

Be careful out there peeps, coming home in one piece may be less exciting than picking up Strava KOM's on descents but is the risk really worth it? Motorists aren't interested in giving us the space we need so we have to think about how we position ourselves on the road at all times.

Oh lastly, traffic lights go orange before turning red. Does nobody start slowing don on the orange anymore? Or does it really mean "floor the pedal?"

There is a road. It's tiny and looks more like a driveway and super easy to miss but it is there.

It was the corner of Victoria and Mount Rhodes. It is more of a driveway on the left...

We came across the accident minutes after it happened, pretty sure the group went past us when we were stopped at the top of Suikerbossie.

Yeah I know it well. I rode past the scene too. The ambulance had left but the firetruck and other emergency vehicles were still there.

Stongs to the rider. Be careful out there guys. The level of crazy on the roads definitely seems to be on the up.

Unfortunately true. If it was the other way around we'd be asking for the death sentence.

I'm actually quite surprised there's not more being said on here about him going through a red light.  There's no excuse for having your head down and not looking at a traffic light.

Usually when a car driver is even slightly at fault everyone wants blood, but when the cyclist is at fault it's just glossed over.

A robot will go orange before it goes red, and even then there are a few seconds before the other side of the intersection turns green and usually a few more seconds before the car has pulled out far enough into the road for the rider to go into it.  After all of that to go into a car at 70km/h is inexcusable.
