So I was in Israel for a few days until yesterday and my opinion of e-bikes have changed, especially with regard to personal transport and the use of e-bikes to commute.  Tel Aviv is buzzing with e-bikes and it seems to have become the norm and best alternative for inner city transport as opposed to motor cars and scooters.    The foldable versions seems to be even more popular because they can be taken on the trains for those who need to travel longer distances.

My friend from Polokwane decided to build his own assisted mountain bike - converted a Totem he bought from Makro. I know it is not an "e-bike" but very close.

I'm very pro ebikes, even though I don't own one I see them opening up or sport to many more cyclists

That is however, not an ebike, not even close. The concept of mopeds are not that new, and it goes without saying that unfortunately that will need a licence.

You should see the guys riding these on the beach in Jeffrey's Bay. Too lazy to walk with their fishing gear so have decided it's fine to ride these on the beach.

Seen them come close to taking out an unsuspecting beach goer on a couple occasions.

VERY good read !

Friends bought two ebikes in Europe, early 2019.  They were told that the drive is to limit the "motor power", rather than speed settings.  As the speed settings can be over-ridden way too easily, leading the issues this gent refers to.

Going to be interesting to see how this game plays out ....

there is a guy that occasionally rides a conversion like that on the cycle lane in CT .... it is slow for the amount of noise it makes, smokes and stinks ..... just gross overall.

the above is just my personal opinion based on my observations.
