For an ebike, definitely steel.

I was about to say, over torqued alu bolts

They snap all the time.

Minimum 8nm, with some lock tight, but I go up to 10 with my crank bolts

6nm is as tight as a what a blue bulls supporter uses to close a brannas bottle...

When the chain starts to creak I stop and lube.  Okay, that applies to the MTB on a long ride ... but you get the idea.  I detest a noisy bike !

 

There were no:

- sounds

- vibrations

- funny gear shifts

 

Simply no alert as to the pending "fun" .....

 

 

The last 15 km was from Malanshoogte, then through all the back streets of Durbanville (LOTS of stop start), out on Wellington, and then via Brackenfell Boulevard (again a lot of stop starts).  Turning from BRackenfell Boulevard onto Frans Conradie the "fun" started.

 

 

 

When I fitted the new ring last year I got new ring bolts.  Those with allen key on both sides.  I always use blue locktight.

 

 

Nope, this one has me stumped ....

 

 

 

O-well, perfect time for the bike to go to Mark for some TLC and a good check up before the Argus.  Rather now, than up Smitswinkel ....

Those Bolts are Easily Over Tightened . Locktite does Not Help in this case .

I popped in at Mark.  The bolts were aluminium.

 

He only has aluminium bolts on the shelf.  

 

 

Any idea where I can buy a set (or two) of steel ring bolts ?

Okay .... when all else fails ..... go read the Parktool Big Blue Book.  

 

different torque settings for Alu and Steel.

 

 

Pretty wide range between 5 to 10 N.m.  My 6N.m would thus have been on the low end, rather than over-torqued.

 

Though steel bolts seems to be the safer option for e.bikes .... now just to track it down ...

 

 

And yes, Parktool do recommend a "thread locker", ie locktight.

You sound like an electrician. They only read when it's life threatening

My uneducated guess is that you had one weak one, when it went the extra force took the others out.

I call bollocks. 

Chris didn't tighten them properly. They came lose. Put new ones and go ride that Argus like a winner. 

Dont over think it chris, you'll be fine by replacing them
