Nic Dlamini's arm broken by Table Mountain rangers

They can't ban cyclists.

They don't own the land. We do. They are merely custodians of the land. It's there job to take care of the park. Which they are doing an appalling job of.

Some logic please.

Try New Zealand mate.......they will ban you breathing

How so?

Their main objective is conservation and reclamation, not activities. A few years ago they closed Orange kloof and certain ravines to the public for the area to recover after various fires and erosion etc yet despite clear signposts, they still haul hundreds of locals and hikers out of there a week. Same with Piers Cave.

They will tell you that too much money goes into policing the cyclists, processing their permits/cards and monitoring access, which is stopping them from doing real work. They will use this as an example as 'even pro riders ride in the park without permits' so who can they trust?

Also, on another angle, if you think the current government cares about 'failure over it's custodianship', are you purposefully ignoring SAA, Eskom etc?! hahahaha

I'm just suggesting that it is a real possibility if the cycling community continues to attack and paint TMNP in a negative light at every opportunity, related to this incident or not.

It is spiteful and well, a very common reaction to spite is spite itself

And just as well they closed Orange Kloof.Look at Skeleton Gorge last weekend

Jokes aside. At least for once out of a gabadillion times it is going to be difficult to play the race card. Unless of course he was in a race.

#TribalismMadeMeDoIt ?

"you are the same colour as me but you speak in a different accent, don't believe in the crap I do and you dress funny (which is true for all roadies anyway)..."

This could very well be exactly what Nic said, moments before that video started.

Freedom comes at a cost.

In all seriousness. Yes Sanpark's mandate is conservation. But they also have a mandate to allow citizens of Cape Town access to the park.

The prophets of doom on here need to calm down a little. Some low level rangers might lose jobs and there might be an undisclosed settlement which will ultimately come out of our pockets.

You okes are all falling into the Carte Blanche trap. That show is gutter journalism at it's finest.

he he some seem to long for the times of kragdadigheid that others think is past. Now why does that Kristofferson song come to mind "rules are rules and any fool can see.......the law is for protection of the people."

I didn't watch the Carte Blanche thing... I don't do TV.... BUT, banning bikes doesn't disallow citizens in the park. It would just prohibit an activity within the park.

There are plenty of activities that are not allowed in the park and some used to be allowed which no longer are.

I'm no prophet of 'doom and gloom', but I am realistic in the fact that they can stop access for bikes and hide behind conservation. I am sure their media liaison can produce a lovely piece of flowery nonsense that shows just how damaging cyclists are to certain areas of the mountain ecology and a drain on resources. True or not.

My main gripe is guys like the Table Mountain bike facebook and twitter feed smearing TMNP and Parks at every unrelated opportunity as well as cycle pages with signed petitions and and and and...

I know that if a group of people did that to me I would go out of my way to make their lives miserable.

Regardless of THIS incident, a smear campaign of this magnitude seldom ends well for either party. The problem is, Parks and TMNP and the SA government hold most of the cards in this fight and the community fails to see this.

Yes they can but it would be a failure of their custodianship of the parks

Nonsense

They were not allowed in the first place and are not allowed in 90% of nature reserves so would not take very much effort or motivation on their part to remove cyclists from the equation when they are not very popular with the the other users

Jislaaik - I'm glad you're not working for SANparks - it's a believable spin for sure. Be interesting to see how much revenue cyclists generate via the permit system.

They should have liability insurance that cover the settlement or part thereof.

2015 Management plan.

SANParks are well aware of their care of duty with this unique property,

A Park within a city, a city within a Park

I don't see how banning cycling would be justified, as anyone with half a brain would see this kicking off a storm of protest and then "trespassing". it won't solve the problem. I also don't think this is a cycling issue at the heart of it. this is someone challenged in the park, and then an incident occoured. The road bike is a side issue.

EXACTLY.

A blanket ban on cycling won't make their problem go away. It will make their problem much much much worse.

IMO Sanparks have done a lot of very good things like open up the trails on the front of TM of late. They are just incredibly good at scoring PR own goals like the Nic incident.

And the second cyclist also gets tazed for nothing .... these cops were certainly very trigger happy

In the southern states you get pulled over just so that the cops can let you you know they are watching you In Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, stereotypes are real.

You say 'smear campaign', while others say 'social media presence' - it sounds quite defensive.

(one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter - depends which side you are on)

But the little bits and pieces of the 'campaign' that I have seen are not uncalled for or unrelated to whats going on - perhaps we aren't referring to the same posts. I am not sure.

But before you TMNP go and make people's lives miserable, perhaps you TMNP should see if perhaps people have a point and have a reason to post on social media.

It's not like there is a complaints department or have an email address that people can engage with...

TMNP is not all that communicative, while Social Media is. So it does seem a bit one sided.

Just some of the posts. Make up your own mind, these are just some on the Twitter page, havent looked at Facebook.... this excludes the retweets of other peoples posts.
