Intrinsic value

Maybe some of the people reading this recognise the bike, I've had it up for sale on this site before but no one was prepared to pay my price so I kept the bike .. happily, because I believe in intrinsic value.

What precisely do you mean by intrinsic value ? It is not clear from your post.

I notice you have this 30 year old 26" "touring/commuter" frame in the classifieds, and you demand R9000 :

https://bikehub.co.za/classifieds/item/hardtail-mountain-bike-frames/453182/ritchey-logic-japanese-tange-frame-and-fork-26

I regret to tell you but that is preposterous.

At a utilitarian level, it is worth 10% of that and for a nostalgic buyer, the generic respray has destroyed its collectablity.

If the bike makes you happy, keep it. If you need to sell it, you will have to face reality. The frame is not worth R9000 to anyone but you.

Welded carbon,... That's got to be special. Even rusted it should be worth a bazillion in research alone

But nobody will appreciate the frame, so if I advertise it here I won’t get the intrinsic value, so I will just rather keep it

steel bike, single speed, fully rigid. No thanks. I'd rather stick needles in my eyes than ride that over a bumpy surface. I don't even like riding a hard tail.

I have an Intense M9. In Metalic blue. 1 of 2 brought into the country. It was a custom color that the CRC team ran. Less than 20 were produced.

It's priceless to me but I could sell it for MAYBE 6k. Shirts happen.

I love my steel framed bikes too … but I think intrinsic value isn’t enough

Selling ‘frames’ is coupled to upgrade-ability and 2nd-hand market value, and demand, …. and “steelies” are at the bottom of that “demand” list.

As for upgrades, it needs to be 29er, disc, tapered head-tube, geometry ito forks, thru-axle, boost etc.

New Cotic 29er SolarisMAX or 29er BFeMAX frames at R13k or R11K is definitely top of my list …. Don’t know what their SA landed costs would be?

the prices on their site is a good indication including shipping etc. They remove UK 20% VAT since you are outside of the uk, and include shipping costs and it ads up to roughly the amount stated on their website when you convert directly. I recently asked for a quote on a solaris max.

This may be marketing hype and if it wasn't to punt the Bridgestone that already for sale then, by the end of the week, we'll see a single speeded chromoly Kona up for grabs.

I've worked in the high end cycling industry as a technician for more than 25years so the opinion I'm about to enumerate is deeply held and backed up with lots of personal history and pain.

It's understood that opinions will differ but if you have one on bicycle frame material, I'd expect that you've done your homework.. I have and I'm very definitely a steel man.

It needs to be recognised that there are a very wide range of steel qualities used in frame construction, starting with high tensile tubing and going all the way to titanium.

Not many shops offer their clients anything like decent steel framed bicycles and very few make after market frames available .. there are good reasons for that but I'm one of those guys who just hates new ****. My bikes last, steel bikes last !

There isn't a single bike I've ridden (and I've worked in Dubai, on the most expensive bicycles in the world) that I would take over my old single speeded chromoly Kona .. which is why bike builders use STEEL.

Maybe some of the people reading this recognise the bike, I've had it up for sale on this site before but no one was prepared to pay my price so I kept the bike .. happily, because I believe in intrinsic value and this bike like my Bridgestone has intrinsic value. It will also outlast pretty much any overpriced latest, greatest bike out there.

I'm sorry to say, but you are confusing "gut feeling" with "intrinsic value".

Quick analysis based on coments by EddieV (as a market analysis)  immediately shows you are way of the mark with no fundementals other than your emotional attachment to your goods. personally, I'm looking for an old style steel bike like yours to chop for my next cargo bike build, so my offer is slightly higher at R1,500.00

You should see how many things of "high intrinsic value are rusting to s h i t because of ill informed and emotional attachment. MTBeer captures it even better.

Good luck
