Elapsed Time versus Moving Time

I often ride in a family group where I have to sit and wait for slower riders.

What this means is at the end of the ride the difference between my Elapsed Time versus my Moving Time is large.

What is the view of the Hub.

Which is the right measure of the ride.

100% the latter.

 

When I had a coach i couldn't leave home at 6, come home at 10 and say I did 4hrs where I actually ride time may only have been 2hr30 because for the other 1hr30 I was sitting in Camps Bay or Sea Point during December holidays taking the longest it ever takes a human to consume a cup coffee o coffee due to outside interferences LOL. But genuinely, Ride time. Training Peaks and even Strava will only record your ride time as time in the saddle, Not elapsed time.

If your riding with family, does it really matter, as long as your having fun? 😁

 

I agree with the above though, Moving time is what counts from a training point of view? When I was still a student and living at home, this was also something I faced a lot when riding with my parents. A good idea is that instead of waiting, ride to the top of the hill, then turn around, ride down to catch up with them, and then take it easy at their pace the second time around, or just sprint to the top again, rinse and repeat. I would often clock 15 to 20% more distance than them over the same amount of time, and you will get a lot fitter faster…

Elapsed time, if you sit  drinking coffee during your ride that's your business 🤪

Alternatively stop your ride and log it as 2 different rides then?

Moving time is fine as long as it's not a timed event otherwise you get a different time to your actual recorded time .... if that matters?

Confusing myself but that's not difficult

Depends, do you want to count the time you’ve ridden or the time you had coffee too ?

it depends on your goals in cycling. If riding in a family group, goals are probably bonding and socialising. In that case, elapsed time to maximise time with (un)loved ones. if the goals are training effect, then it's time spent in zones etc, so moving time is probably best

I generally pause my ride if I'm going to be stopped for longer than a few minutes. Unless its a timed event, because then elapsed time is what they measure.

Sometimes the differences are pretty substantial, but I'd definitely say I went on a 50 hour ride, not a 35 hour one...

OP, why do you care how much time you spent if you're just trundling with family though? Hell, even when I'm riding for "training", as long as I'm home roughly the time I want/need to be home the only thing I (or you) should care about is how much fun you had.

Ride time, that’s the measured effort which is recorded by your device and Strava/similar. Which will also show you the total elapsed time.

My computer is set to auto pause for this. Makes life that much easier.

I do moving time for most riding (This also takes care of robots I cannot skip). But for timed rides or races elapsed time definetly matters. 

I find that auto pausing works great for this as well, except on really steep stuff, going so slowly it pauses sometimes sucks.

I always look to see how much time I've stood waiting.
I generally try to maximize the time that I'm out and will also sometimes loop back while waiting. 
Coffee stops another story where I just chill.

i dont its just after a ride we were sitting talking times

the debate was raised about who logged moving and who logged elapsed time.

so I posed question to hub.

Well that depends, do you want to measure elapsed time or moving time? How long is a piece of string? What is the meaning of life?

Riding time as that's the measurement of the physiological impact of the impact.

So for the 2019 Ride Joberg 947 (I was a newby) I had a goal of 4 hours. My Garmin was set to auto pause and as I came accross the finish line I was on 3:57 ish on the computer and ecstatic to have met my goal - only until the results came out and my time was 4:01. Rookie error!! So agree elapsed time is only really important in timed events.
