Any of you fine folk ride the Outeniqua Pass? Drove it today. Looks like something that needs to be ticked off very soon.

Looks like a mini Grappa.

If  you are talking about the tar Outeniqua Pass, then yes, but keep in mind that it is pretty busy. It has a wide shoulder though, which makes it better. Great views. Nice curves, good for road bike. Drove over it plenty a time. Never rode it on a bike though.

But if you are talking about the older Montagu Pass, the untarred one predating the modern pass, then HELL YES, it is an absolute MUST!  Done it on the mtb, but a nice gravel bike or even a roadie with bigger tyres will be great. Nearly no traffic, peace and quiet, scenery out of this world. Sorry, no single track Duane, but it is the very next best thing to it. Well worth the trouble.

Living in Groot Brak, close to George, I will never do the Outeniqua pass by bicycle only because of the safety (stupid car drivers) aspect. Haven't done the Montague pass myself, still on my bucket list as well. Every Monday late afternoon there is a group riding it.

The tar road pass several times but would not ride it in peak hours.   Weekends early morning would be best.  Well that was the last time I rode it a few years ago. The traffic situation must have changed a bit in the mean time.

As an ex-Georgian (I grew up there), I have it on very good authority that riding the Montague, and by extension the Outeniqua passes is presently a dangerous affair. With the proximity of the Blanco township to both these passes (they start at the same spot), people are getting bike jacked there often, which includes the odd stabbing. I wanted to go ride there 2 weeks ago, and was discouraged to do so by a good mate who also rides a lot.

I lived in Blanco for 8 years before moving to Cape Town, and in the time I was there, one would often hear of attacks on the Montague especially. If you do want to ride there, go in a largish group. And even then, apparently...

This is really sad, as I have spent my youth cycling the forestry roads below the mast tower on the Outeniqua mountain. That place holds some special memories for me.
