"It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle."

- Ernest Hemingway

…no amazing pics, b-u-t INSPIRING company….

on a routine washing-delivery ride to my elderly Mom, riding up Chappies i sat behind a hand-cycle, and we chatted a while…

…did not catch his name, but he was disabled from the waist down, unable to cough, nor sneeze (interesting factoid)…and he was making GOOD progress up Chappies.

I asked him about close shaves, being so close to the ground, etc, and he mentioned SEVEN cars hitting him in a 12-year period; all seven cars were driven by the Fairer sex (sorry, Ladies!), but more importantly, FIVE of those seven accidents were as a result of distraction/confirmed cell-phone usage. :(

One of the accidents broke his hip, & femur - hectic that he rides on, keeping well left and hoping for the best…

Setting out myself with 5kg bag of clean washing and a heavyish seat post-mounted basket, i felt that is was a bit of a schlep; man, did i get a reality check chatting to him!!!

If anyone knows the gent, please let me know his name? He turned around atop Chappies, whereas i went to Noordhoek, so never got his name. Apparently, he used to work with the late Tim Brink!

INSPIRING!

Skinny Minnie! I read somewhere that riding as many different types of bikes on different routes as possible reduces one's risk of injury 😎

NSBB, how do you decide which bike to take in the mornings?

My oldest mate in the world turned 60 in the week. We arranged a little cycle down to Brighton. Beer, bikes and bunny chow. Holy trifecta

With some Mrs. Balls on the side just to round it off. Well done- looks like a great day out.

Marakele 70km with a collapsed Thudbuster seatpost (was not part of the plan!) yesterday.

The vistas within Markele (big 5 National Park in Limpopo) are other worldly. This pic was a few kms after I saw very, very fresh elephant droppings, still shining and steaming, so it was a very quick snap and go.

Seatpost doesn’t look collapsed in the pic but with my weight on it I was pedalling a Harley up every hill, 80mm of my reach taken away, and had bump compliance in the negatives. Spiderweb saddle added to the joy of the day.

I feel my medal was well earned lol.

I am absolutely shook that my tyres didn’t lose air, because I was so tired and sore trying to navigate the soft sand that in the last 30km I just moered through the bushes at the side of the track and figured if I die, I die. But nope, not an ounce of air lost and not a spot of sealant (which was freshly topped up on Thursday) to be seen. I’m so confused by this whole experience 😂

Best day cycling I have had in a long long time. Weather was good, no rain lots of cloud so no sun which is good too at times. We took our sweet time and another less proficient cyclist joined us. We were all at school together and she does not cycle often, so no rush. Just a gentle amble along the Downs link in nature. Soul food just to chill and be under no time constraints. Not often in today’s world you don’t care about time.
