Yoh... I rode the Uber pretzel yesterday.

8km up the Alp d'zwift my legs fell off. I would have walked in real life. Or cried.

But I turned the cranks at 1.5w/kg to the top for a 70 minute Alp and a 4:50 Uber Pretzel.

My wife said 'well done. 5 hours on the trainer is stupid.'

Dane, dude, bonkers.

Time to reflect on what we took for granted ....

HAZENDAL (pre-revamp) ... THIS is where is all started for Maritz and I ... and what a humble start ...

attachicon.gifFiets 1-2.jpg

attachicon.gifFiets 1-4.jpg

and true to his nature ... straight for the mud ....

attachicon.gifFiets 1-10.jpg

14 days later it was time for a 20'' ... and no more training wheels .... grass next to CWC. That Makro TOTUM is still at his parents house, and still used for riding around the street. MANY of his friends have learnt to ride on that bike !! That cheapy has served us well.

attachicon.gifIMG_0707.JPG

And then I got brave ... my first MTB ... a second hand HT ....

attachicon.gifMeerendal-60.jpg

NO, Burry Stander is not fun on a HT .... The Merida was promptly traded in for the TREK .... And Maritz and I did our first 12km ride at Hermanus trails the week before his 6th birthday .... jip, good few stops for sweets and to stretch the legs, but the 5 year old finished his 12km ride, without once pushing his bike.

attachicon.gifHermanus Trails-10.jpg

attachicon.gifHermanus Trails-12.jpg

Our first event .... Willow Creek .... the 10km route was closer to 13km .... the last 3km were brutal for Maritz .... But he soldiered on, and refused to get help from the sweeper vehicle !!! Looking at the photos, ... those were some brutal trails for a rigid 20'' bike ...

attachicon.gifWillow Creek-37.jpg

attachicon.gifWillow Creek-50.jpg

After this we knew Maritz was committed to trails, and we bought the Momsen ....

attachicon.gifMeerendal-10.jpg

Time to invest in a coach and some skills training, for Maritz .... though I learnt as much ... :whistling:

2018 Maritz joined the SPUR series .... though his first ride was rained out .... at least the sub-nippers race was called off. Later they allowed the sub-nippers to join the practice laps .... Maritz QUICKLY got back into his drenched cycling clothes and enjoyed the route to the max !!

My personal little milestone .... cycling up Dorstberg on my 50th with some friends ....

2019 I started doing solo rides on Sundays, with the normal Saturday rides with Maritz. Doing Swartberg under my own steam will always be my high light ...

What a long weekend:

Friday
I did a route recce on the Easter Bunny Route on Rouvy and thought this would make an awesome race route. I mean, how hard could a 99.99% downhill sprint be?

edit: Seems I've reached my limit for the month to upload images using Tapatalk, so I have to upload the rest by laptop.

Saturday
An easy club ride on a route I found in Victoria, Canada [emoji1063] - exported the GPX file, uploaded it to my spare GC account, exported the TCX file and uploaded that to my Rouvy account before converting it to a course, and finally an online race.

Sunday

A race on the Easter Bunny route was setup for my club mates, and a few others.

My plan was to ride a #stravart route I created in my own neighbourhood, then be ready to race - I got my timing wrong, and had close to 75 minutes between both rides.

First the #stravart ride - a game of HANG MAN.

It has a few good hill repeats, so might use this in my real training once we're allowed outside again.

Then the race down the Grossglockner High Alpine Road in Austria, and another Easter bunny to add to the collection. I was slower this time, compared to Friday's fresher legs ride, but only by seconds. 33-34 mins of pain.

Monday

a recovery day, aka the coffee ride.

This one would be in Amsterdam [emoji1179] , on a running route I also converted from Strava to Rouvy. After posting my ride on Instagram, I got a message from a Dutch runner that said his eagle would catch my fish - I told him it looked more like a parrot than an eagle

Had a weird ride yesterday. Switched my garmin to a screen with only speed and then just enjoyed exploring trails for a couple of hours. No stressing about Hr, power, ave speed or anything, just focusing on the sun shine and the joy and privilege of being out on my bike.

those hills in old alberton used to be my hill training grounds.

Hill repeats going past alberton hardware.

There a little bump called Marthinus Oosthuizen. The segment is 790m long with 42m (elevation).

While I’m third on the real segment, 2s behind the KOM, my time on the Rouvy virtual route was 20s slower but higher average power. HR is missing as I'm using the iPhone Rouvy app and it doesn't like Ant+. Below is the comparison between virtual and real. Given that I'm 5 years older, a little less fit/conditioned/strong/whatever, the effort yesterday wasn't that bad. Motivation for the strength training season coming soon.
