It is all "self funded", well, privately funded. Same for the much more popular XCO; if you have the slots and it is self funded, go for it. You have to have a certain number of UCI points to be able to just enter. Those are collected by racing domestic series races and the IXS cups which are in Europe. The IXS races are properly packed. There are hundreds of fast guys trying to make a go of it via the IXS races. There's also an IXS rookies cup but I'm unsure if those count towards anything As an example around 180 elites entered for the Les Gets world cup 60 riders make it through from timed qualifying into the "semi finals" and 30 make it from there into the big show. There's also a rather large safety barrier to entry. If you think being able to send the main line at Conties qualifies you to safely ride a world cup track you are GRAVELY mistaken. World cup tracks are long and steep and the jumps are MUCH bigger and scarier than they look on TV.
