It will hardly be a surprise attack over this stretch of road. I came through there this morning on the harbour side and a guy was running across the highway to get to us

Every post in this thread is telling you to avoid this area but still you tempt fate.

I've been commuting over there almost everyday for years even within last week, morning and afternoon. This is the 1st time I'm 2nd guessing to go over. There has been smash and grabs on a regular basis and I've even been a victim and seen it happen to someone else.

The Police has been patrolling and parking close by as they know its a hot spot but cannot be there all there time.

The only way its going to stop is if we do something about it.

I know the route they run, they head down toward the train line and under the bridge. They assume know one will follow.

I haven't thought it through but getting gatvol of this.

I am having a hard time understanding why people are still cycling there. You KNOW that the odds of you making it through unscathed are heavily against you, but still people still ride there. The mind boggles, and I almost want to say that in such cases sympathy is unwarranted. Stupidity should not be praised, but rather called out.

As much as the sentiment of "doing something about it" is appropriate, the reality is that if the designated law enforcement parties are unable to manage it then what makes people think it is their entitled right to ride there, so they will?

I just don't get it. I used to ride my mountain bike past Dunoon on my way to the Tygerberg trails and back again on the way home every weekend before Covid, but then the explosion of informal shacks up to the road I was riding in made that an unviable option. So now I drive to the trails whenever I want to ride. I can still decide to claim my entitlement and ride past there, but I am almost guaranteed of throwing a thumb to get back home again after I am relieved of my bike, phone and whatever else I may be carrying. Should I just say "screw it" and ride anyway, or should I apply wisdom and not go anymore? I choose the latter. Sadly, this thread is making me think lots of folks still choose the former.

Let's game this out.

How do you follow them?
I assume that riding is not an option, so where do you leave the bike?
What do you do when you get to them and they pull out a weapon? There has been mention of firearms. Do you have one? If so, do you use it? What will your defence in court be if you do use it?
What happens if they gang up on you and severely injure you, or worse, you get killed?
Was it worth it to pursue criminals who are not working in isolation and have the advantage in knowing the terrain and escape routes?

Look, we're all gatvol, but the reality is no-one is going to do anything about it. So the wise thing to do is to find alternative options.

Giving chase is way too dangerous and not worth your life. Following these guys with a drone untill private security retrieval rocks up... Very demure. Very mindful.

I've also tagged all my bikes with well hidden airtag-android equivalents. Pretty accurate in Samsung dense areas.

Have contacts in private security who are very effective and enthusiastic about retrieving stollen goods. Hope I never have to use this option. For their sakes.

Maybe avoiding the area is not an option, how are we supposed to get into town from Tableview (no, I'm not jumping on a myciti bus).

The Berkeley road/Amazon route isn't much better, probably more dangerous going through Woodstock

Paarden eiland - carefully through the koeberg interchange using the pavement - bear left and cross over voortrekker road - past the eyesore that is the new Amazon Riverclub temple of Mammon, Woodstock, then either up to Walmer estate into top end of town via Roeland street OR , past the castle, adderly, to waterfront.

Tons of risk of all sorts and not a pleasant ride by any stretch of the imagination .....

Then again ....

Very few commuters, and regular weekend riders, are on the Hub.

Not like this is making news headlines.  So many commuters, and weekend riders, may just have been lucky this far, oblivious to the contents of this thread.

Knowing of this area, and the typical pattern "near" large informal settlements, I do plan my routes to avoid these hot spots.  Frustrating, as it means a ride along the coast to Suikerbossie would start with a drive past the hot spots.

Ok 👍  is Samsung still opt in when it comes to smart find and bouncing off other Samsung phones?
