On 21/06 around 10:20 I was attacked by about 6 - 7 knife-wielding youngsters (none of them older than 10) about 2km from Kyamandi direction Stellenbosch. They were hiding in the ditch to the left in the thick grass patch. Managed to get away unscathed thanks to help from a couple in a white Toyota Cross who charged the youngsters with the vehicle.

Will definitely advise to avoid the area completely

This is a very very bad sign. What a ghastly experience.

Teachable moment for us up in GP.

Why do people ride past here, is the route, or the only route? Because there seem to be a few ways to avoid this extremely dangerous place.

There are TWO routes entering Stellenbosch from the NOTH :

1. From the N1 or Bottelary the route via Kayamandy is the most used route.  Sadly also thee hot-spot.

2. From Klapmuts side, R44, enters via Cloetesville.  Typically much safer, though there have been the odd incident.

From Bottelary you can go straight via Kromme Rhee to join up to the R44.  This is the route I typically use.  Not much further, but the Kromme Rhee section is narrow with zero shoulder .... I avoid this section during peak hours.

because some people have the mentality of I've always cycled this route & I was never a victim, until their luck runs out.

Not making this their problem but can't one of the security companies be there at certain times to lead through the riders at certain times. That way if one is there and has missed the time, they use one of the other routes as opposed to Schwarzeneggering it though?

That mentality is suicidal. I had a lot to say about hijackers until one day they took me with, and I had to display a level of survival I (or they) never thought I had

I drove past there this morning and noticed a Camera on top of the pole on which one of the Speed Cameras is mounted. Not sure if it works, and who controls it, but there should (in theory) be camera evidence of the robberies taking place there.

On another note, even though it was extremely misty with poor visibility, I noticed more "recreational cyclist" without any warning lights, than cyclists with lights. BLOWS MY MIND!!!!!

Drove past this mess this morning, judging by the amount of people running all over the place, I doubt there was anyone left to receive the eviction notice.

If anyone cycles past there before the weekend, can you please report back on the area? I’m hoping to cycle that side this coming weekend.

Perhaps we should caveat that to read "If anyone cycles past there before the weekend AND LIVES TO TELL THE TALE AND STILL HAS BICYCLE AND CELL PHONE, please report back.
