Hi everyone

Has anyone purchased a Canyon? Looking at Canyon via the Canyon website seeing that they are now direct to consumer and deliver to SA, but cautious about the import duty it might attract.

Any feedback is appreciated.

There's a Canyon bikes thread. it has a great spreadsheet that will throw out a pretty accurate price to your door. Has all the shipping and duties etc. may just have to adjust the currency value accordingly.

Edit: Found it. Copied and pasted:

  • There is no VAT on shipping
  • The Import VAT however is a more difficult calculation as all imports into SA is worked out on ATV (Added Tax Value)
  • For easy landed cost calculation in SA, we share this with customers: https://docs.google....dit?usp=sharing
  • An SA citizen can make 3 imports per year on your ID number. Whether it is from books to bikes. SARS will stop your 4th import when your ID number is all maxed out and request an import code from you.
  • If the value of your import into SA is more than R50’000 you also need an Import Code.
  • If you purchase a Canyon (all coming from Germany), you can gladly use your own Importers Code. If you do not have one, we can easily clear your purchase with our local Import Code. The courier (UPS) will inform us when it is requested from SARS and as soon as they do we always just create the document to clear it anyhow on your behalf, so no struggle for the customer.
  • You will make two payments: One to Canyon for the bike, parts, frame, shipping and box. The other to UPS for the Duties and VAT once the bike arrives in SA
  • The fluctuating ZAR is a rather unique case for SA and something not normal for the Germans to experience, there is planning being done, although slightly difficult and slow, for a ZAR value on: www.canyon.com/en-za/

Hey guys,

Wondering if anyone has first hand experience here. My fiance' is stuck in Scotland during lockdown and wants to buy some stuff there but she has already reached her luggage capacity. Is there any duties, vat or any other charges besides courier charges if she sends stuff from her house there in the UK to us back home via DHL for example, she'll obviously remove original sealed packaging?

Which components?

Duties are zero on most components, but ATV is what they refer to as the VAT. So you’ll pay for the freight, plus a handling charge and ATV.

During lockdown, they won’t be able to ship.

No components. she wants to buy herself  shoes, clothing and a helmet which most carry 45% if imported directly hence I was wondering if she buys it for herself there and then sends it back this side is she will still be charged here too?

She will pay VAT that side, an then again when it arrives here, plus duties on the clothing. It might better to pre-book excess luggage and bring it back that way. It works out cheaper if you pay before the day of the flight.

It will be cheaper to pay the extra bag charge or over weight than paying for DHL.

then when she lands in SA and goods she bought is under R5500 in total it will be free of vat.
if its over R5500 she will pay vat on the amount more than R5500.
this will be the cheapest overall option.

If she can fit it into her hand luggage or strap the helmet to her backpack then it will cost nothing extra.

Just not if you use Aramex etc, you will pay VAT in the country of origin AND here...

So can still work out cheaper if you got your maths correct :)
