  1. I've just been through this exact exercise, ended up with 11-36 PG-1130 cos it's all you can get in that range. Shimano maxes out at 11-34. Ultegra 50/34 rings up front. RD capacity - Ultegra RX or GRX RD-810 are rated for 34T max casssette but the extra 2 teeth on the 36 works ok. Shifting can be a biit fiddly to set up but works well enough when you get it. The 40T rated capacity is only 1 short of the 41T range of the compact/11-36 combo. I find gearing a bit tall when hitting 18% climbs at the end of a long day (Gallows, anyone?) but I'm too proud to walk so I haven't had to yet. Your only other option while keeping the rest of your setup is a GRX crank which can take you down to a 30T, which should be enough to climb a wall.
  2. There you go. TT measurement is more important than ST measurement in working out whether a bike fits you. Longer torso and longer arms = longer TT. And linked to this is mobility, the lower you can get while staying comfortable, the longer you can go. As per the other thread on bike fit, just cos it works for you doesn't mean it'll work for someone else.

  8. Gravel bikes suck at everything, but they can do anything. It's what makes them fun. If you ride bikes for fun you probably have a screw loose and an odd relationship with pain (an observation, not a judgement, just to be clear.) So it's worth a try if you have the opportunity,
  9. I feel you don't know who you're talking to here. Not everyone on Bikehub is an armchair expert, some have real world experience too. You're working off a sample size of one, I guarantee you that John has a few more reference points.
  10. We can also do it, about R 2 500 all in. Whether it's worth it or not depends on how nice the fork is.
  11. What kind of sensor are you after? Speed will work off the phone's GPS, if you want HR or cadence you'll jut need to make sure whatever sensor you get transmits Bluetooth. The default is ANT which your phone won't pick up.

    On the flipside, the number of R1m + cars I see with 200k worth of bikes flapping about on one of those clip on 2 stick jobs never ceases to amaze me. I reckon if you're using it often enough, especially shuttling, it'll be more than worth the investment.
  13. The Google says Fruugo will just eat your money. If you have a lanyard then the 3d printed one should be fine, otherwise Dogears are the benchmark for this repair.
  14. A pap RD spring will make for sluggish downshifts, not skipping. Upshifts will be fine. Similar symptoms to a worn cable. Replacing the wrong thing is a waste of money, even if you got it at a good price.
  15. Shifter and RD should be the same, although with 12sp the pull ratios are close enough that it works ok. (Ok, not perfectly.) The RD most likely isn't your problem though.

  19. If you change your chain just before it hits 0.5% the rest of your drivetrain should last forever. In reality though, chainrings are made of alu so they'll wear out eventually just from grit on the chain, especially MTB - they have fewer teeth so the load per tooth is higher, and they get more dirt. I've got a 5000km old cassette on my MTB that's still going strong 3 chains later, and my gravel bike has 5000km on each of the chains with no sign of wear yet. It all depends on how well you look after your chains and how good you are about measuring them. If you pay attention to these things they'll last forever, if you don't you can write off a complete drivetrain in 2000km.
  20. Maturity doesn't always come with age. I still need to break 3 at some point in my adult life, I did it when I was 15 so surely it can't be that hard... I see 99er entries are open so I'll be on that train as well.
  21. Nothing to do with speed limits. Freeways can have limits anywhere from 80 - 120. The N1 into town from the M5 is still a freeway and as such illegal to ride a bike on but it's full of cyclists cos it's about the only way to get in to town from the West Coast without getting stabbed.

  23. 2015 the peninsula was on fire, 2017 disaster management said it was too windy (!) and and there were protests on the route. I was sitting outside my flat with one shoe on and got the message that they'd canned it. Didn't do another one till '22. EDIT - seems I'm not alone, looking at the numbers there were 32k finishers in '15, down to 26k in 2018 and less than 16k in '22. I wonder how much of this was caused by the cancelled year. I guess this goes a long way to explaining the increased entry fees, fixed costs will only go up and need to be shared among a smaller pool of riders. Glad they've managed to get headline sponsors again, hopefully this can bring costs down a bit in the coming years and maybe get numbers up a bit again.
