seriously though, drop Matt the message on his insta page. I’m sure he’ll reply sometime. John won’t share his athletes routines.

The relative positioning of team mates isn’t a dead cert in hierarchy. One day you’re the hammer the next day you’re the nail. From what I can tell, Matt likes to ride on the front. There could be several reasons for this; sighting the trail , just a better feeling of comfort could be another.  You’d need to be able to hear the dialogue between them to get a better sense of what is going on. Howard seems more comfortable across a broader speed range on the climbs whereas Matt likes a constant tempo. So let Matt sit on the front to set his tempo and Howard follows. You don’t want a faster climber starting to stretch you out when you’re having trouble on the climb. Matt can’t hide behind Howard anyway, he’s a hike head and shoulder taller.

what is apparent is that Bikehub needs to do a podcast with Matt where these questions can be asked. Maybe John can arrange a S2S seminar with some of their top athletes and the audience can ask the milllion and one questions.

just based on the highly variable and sometimes downright weird training and preparation for the epic amongst the back markers there is very clearly still a huge gap in the market for this information

Thanks but I am fully capable of replying with correct info to anyone directly asks me…

You well respected and obviously well informed. Its still okay for okes to share their views (even if we know as much as Gerald and Neil) and talk smack (Fini chain gate) on this thread.

    be lekker 🤌

100% agree, never have said otherwise ever on what people think or say.
what they should do is read your post and know it also applies to them and all.

    always lekker.

What do you know .... I've also seen those numbers you've been posting for the Mullet,I reckon I could take him if I felt like 😎

Apparently nothing or not that much I have been informed this week by some. While I don’t disagree with this, it was just good to be informed with certain this is true.

Irish is not too bad, depending how high you go. I normally climb it to the 5th contour road. Most riders should be able to do the Jonkers meander in about 90 minutes.

Upper Firehut might catch a few tired riders. I myself never ride the very top of Firehut. Just too rocky and tight.

Every time after doing 6 days of epic and being in your moer with 30-45hrs in the legs?
Different RPE value I would imagine

I’m sure it was pointed out that winning Atta does not mean you can ride with Matt Beers for 8 days. In my opinion we don’t appreciate how special Beers is. Nino hardly puts any time into him on the technical sections and we know what happens on the flatter sections.

Also to add some info on Attekwas, every year training for Attewkas since 2022 or 2021 I have given Matt a huge load leading in, typically 2-3 weeks of 25-30hrs and it ends with Attekwas. Then we analyse and go forward.
Alex was so good this year at Attekwas, Matt was simply beat he will admit it but not bad for someone coming off a huge block vs riders who taper for Attekwas.

Alex Miller rolled off the starting line this morning on stage 5 and pulled out so that his partner Johan van Zyl can continue today. Relieved he did not partner up with Beers.

He is a great kid, I have said it before that I believe in him as a rider and is much better team mate locally for Matt to race with at Toyota Spez.
    Epic is different
Winning Epic with Matt is a whole new world vs Tankwa
People dont really understand the level Matt is above anyone in South Africa Marathon/Stage race wise.

  7. Going into the next 3 days if we just take the top 2 mens teams I believe it will come down to who of the 2 weaker partners is the strongest weaker partner and how the stronger partner manages their respective partner.

Looking at it, Matt and Nino are in the driving seat and it's for Nino to get rid of Matt & Howie while managing Fini.

In the ladies race baring illness or mechanical I cant see Ghost losing this. They created a gap and now are managing it very well. today they responded to and neutralised any attacks. They seem to have the power to dictate alittle.

However, its 2min to 2nd, as we saw today in the mens race, that means little when it comes to Epic in a single stage and can be eliminated very quick.

I am for one looking forward to the racing ahead in both categories.

I've gone and looked and this is what I have found:

727 teams were registered; I can't see how many actually started

    710 teams finished the prologue

    659 teams finished stage 1

    599 teams finished stage 2

So possibly 128 teams have not finished after 3 days.  I didn't check individual finishers, so I don't know how many teams have both riders out.

Seems a lot of money for 2 days of riding.

Does not look like a bike that has done 2 rides 🫤

Kind of odd he did not know about the new bike being launched?
did the shop not tell him to sell current stock or is he that potentially uninformed?
Either way he has a new bike and someone can get a basically brand new bike for less

Even when the sunshines, the temp is a nice 25 degrees, blue skies, a nice refreshing breeze blowing…. You know those perfect days…. There’s will always be someone who will whinge that the weather is crap ( I’m comparing the weather to the CE tv coverage).

I'm sitting here at home in  🇨🇭 ( it’s a public holiday where I work) watching supersports live coverage listening to Gerald, Sabine and the doper ( 😇) Owen, geez what is there to complain about???

Maybe Sabine could sound less German 🤙

    True words.

Owen? Is he just commentating on the Supersport stream?

Just a random thought that popped into my head. Matt and Koolharvy as partners!? (Sponsors, etc excluded) Think that will be a really powerful team, or is Koolharvy past his prime, or is their riding styles and strengths and weakness much the same, and that will hinder them more than anyhing?

Keen to hear the thoughts of those more in the know. (John..)

2 very different stages of their careers.

I too thought Alex would be the better bet especially after their Tankwa performance.  Four days is a very different animal than an eight day stage race so I will defer to the team decisions as they would have a better understanding of the overall balancing of the main team and support team. I suspect there was a desire to a support team that is stronger than any previous support team that could also contend for the African jersey? Grotts was only my third pick, I had Martin Kossman in there behind Blevins but …Olympic year so I really should have taken the Grotts option more seriously.

Koolhavy is associated with Specialized anylonger. He’s working with Czech brands Superior Bikes and Zleen tyres now. There no fit there at all. He’s also not racing epic for an overall but more for the product exposure, testing and development feedback.

Tankwa is 3 days and a short prologue.
3hrs of racing a day (or a smidge more)

Fini a worthy partner to put up with Nino for 8 days... Bar serious technicals they going to put up a good fight to keep yellow.

Didn't expect Speed Company to loose almost 3mins today.

Day 4/5 will be the marker

Twenty years ago I was on the start line with Andre du Plessis. We're still friends even after swearing at each other on stage 4. Ok I did the swearing. Looking at this race I see  Mittenwaller suffered a bit. Happens if you don't want to rest a bit in the week leading up to the event. Would've loved to see Miller and Beers in a team. Would have a better chance according to some in the know. And in Olympic years we usually have less top xco riders interested. I know of a few teams definitely coming next year that's focusing on Olympics this year

I often agree with your view on riders when you say things or add to a convo. Local and international. Road and mtb.
This comment on partners for Matt is incorrect for epic. This is epic, not Tankwa or Sani.
Can Alex get there? Yes I think he can over time, I rate him as a rider.
    Right now? No.
He will agree with that currently.

I don’t know much, very little when I hear all the experts talking and typing in general but on this 1 small thing I’m more in the know than many of the people in the know.
